Webinar on How City Planning Works – February 9

When: Feb 9, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Topic: Planning for Priorities: City Planning and Infrastructure Impacts

From http://kitchissippiward.ca/content/planning-priorities-city-planning-and-infrastructure-impacts-february-9-2021 by councillor Jeff Leiper:

Over the last six years, I’ve frequently been asked questions related to how the city is planned and the infrastructure we need paid for. Cycling advocates in particular wonder how and when funding decisions get made, and according to what priorities.

On paper, city planning is elegant. On February 9, I’ll be using a case study approach to explore in just 15 slides how cities in Ontario are planned, the funding mechanisms that support that planning, and who decides where the money is spent and when. While cycling infrastructure will be the focus, the material is equally applicable to virtually everything the City does.

Join me for an hour and half from 7-8:30 for this free webinar to explore in easy-to-understand terms the big strokes of city planning and how those become funding decisions for projects and initiatives big and small. You’ll learn and have the chance to ask questions about when the key decisions are made and who you need to influence to achieve the outcomes that you want.

Register at the link here, and see you on the 9th!

Robert N. Grainger, an expert on local history, has chaired the History Committee of the Westboro Beach Community Association since 1995. In 2005, he authored Early Days on Westboro Beach: Reflections and Images. This was the centennial year of the creation of the Police Village of Westboro. For a later project he helped the Woodroffe North Community Association produce a history of the village of Woodroffe entitled River, Road and Rail: Woodroffe Memories, published in 2011. Currently, he is preparing a history of the Champlain Park neighbourhood, previously known as Riverside Park. He is one of the most knowledgeable people around when it comes to the history of Old Ottawa West.

Annual General Meeting Results

As usual, the candidates were voted in without opposition. Guest speakers spoke, reports were made by the subcommittees and many things were discussed (my favourite was the telescope night idea, runner up was a feel good rink story).

The message from the board is:

Thx all for a great AGM, lots of amazing things happening in our neighbourhood – special thank you to Liz from the CPCA and Fiona in Jeff’s office for their help in making the AGM a success!

Here are the public documents from the 2021 annual general meeting of the Champlain Park Community Association.

  • AgendaAGM20210127.pdf – The Agenda for this meeting.
  • Financial documents are available from the finance committee upon request.
  • MinutesAGM20191029.pdf – Last year’s (well, 2019) AGM minutes, currently draft status until approved by a vote.
  • AGM20210127 PZ Report.pdf – Planing and Zoning Report; a succinct 9 PowerPoint pages on what’s been going on, with a section on the infill and “inner urban transect” changes happening here (in the extreme case leading to huge houses with no green space).
  • 2020 CPCA environment report slides & text.pdf – Environment Report; lots of projects and lots of photos.

Launching the Goldenrod Community Garden

Call for volunteers for a Community Garden approved for NCC land, west of the Parkdale off-ramp.

Dear Community Garden supporters,

The Goldenrod Community Garden has recently received approval to build a garden on a parcel of NCC land between Goldenrod Drive in the Tunney’s Pasture Complex and the SJAM Parkway. The garden location is just west of the Parkdale off-ramp of the SJAM Parkway.

We received approval and funding from the Ottawa Community Garden Network (a City of Ottawa agent) to purchase materials to build the garden infrastructure including: fencing, a storage shed and raised beds. We anticipate that we will start building as soon as the snow melts in the spring of 2021, approximately mid-April.

We are looking for members of the Hintonburg, Mechanicsville, Champlain Park and Westboro communities who are interested in participating in building the Goldenrod Community Garden in a number of roles. Please read the roles below and send an email with your name, availability and role to: goldenrodgarden@gmail.com
