Stolen Bike

Subject: Stolen Bike

Good morning, I just wanted to pass along an incident that happened last night on the corner of Cowley and Sunnymede. Someone had broken into the resident’s shed and stolen his bicycle. A police report is being or has been filed.

If anyone has a door cam could you kindly review the footage to see if there is anything that might be useful for the police.

For those of you who have bikes, I would suggest registering them with Garage 529 (Bike registration to reduce theft and help recovery | 529 Garage project529.com). Also, I would suggest that even if you store your bikes in a locked shed, or in the backyard, that you lock your bike to a solid structure. It’s just any added level of defence.

Thanks very much.

Westboro Beach and Bike Path Detour

Westboro Beach Redevelopment and Bike Path Detour

At a consultation session on May 3rd Benoit Gelinas, Public Relations Officer for the NCC provide an update on the Westboro Beach Construction which will result in a detour to the Ottawa River bike path from Island Park to Westboro Beach for all of 2023 and possibly part of 2024. A map of the detour is attached. Benoit noted that signage will be in place at various locations to help the public navigate the bike path detour. Users will now have to cross the SJAM Parkway at the Island Park traffic lights to reconnect to the existing pathway. This will be an inconvenience to cyclists and pedestrians bikers accustomed to a continuous nonstop route.

Benoit also reported that the Beach will be open this summer “at 2/3 capacity on a non-supervised basis.” Signage will be posted on swimming conditions. Porta potties will be on site.

Bicycle Safe Riding Workshops for Kids

The Ottawa Safety Council is running several CycleSafe Workshops throughout the City this summer!

These workshops are open to children aged 5-14 years old, cost $30/child and range in duration from 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Less about how to ride a bike, these workshops focus primarily on safety concepts and awareness needed to share the road safely with other road users, including: anticipating and understanding other road users’ perspectives and actions, Selective Attention, parked cars, positioning on the road, weather conditions and terrain, falling safely, communicating with other road users, hazard scanning, navigating intersections/driveways and right of way.

Hello,

I live at 193 Keyworth and got home last night at about 3am and found a bicycle in “the middle” of Keyworth.
If anyone lost a bike off the back of their car (all I can imagine), please have them reach me by e-mail.

Right Bike – A community bike share program

Right Bike is a community bike share program starting operations in our extended neighbourhood in mid-May.  For a $40.00 membership fee, people will be able to rent one of the 40 purple coloured bicycles to be stationed at several kiosks along the operating corridor between Mountain Equipment Co-op (in Westboro) and Bayswater/Somerset Square (in Wellington West).

For details please visit www.rightbike.org

An added bonus is that these utilitarian bicycles are made from discarded bikes thereby lessening waste.   They’ve been refurbished by Cycle Salvation which is a member of the Causeway Group of Social Businesses.  If you have unused bikes consider donating them to Cycle Salvation at 473 Bronson Avenue, near Gladstone, during store hours.  ww.cyclesalvation.org

Habitat for Humanity ReStores accepts bike donations on behalf of Cycle Salvation.  Locations at 2370 Walkley Road (near St. Laurent) and 7 Enterprise Avenue (near Merivale).  Please call 613 744-7769  before donating to check that they still need bicycles.  www.habitatncr.com
