Rosemount Library Update

A message from the new librarian to our neighbourhood (was addressed to the CPCA board, but the general parts are worth repeating here). By the way, I was there yesterday dropping off a book. They now have a desk just inside the front door, with a plexiglass shield, where they will take your returned books or give you books you’ve ordered online.

My name is Kelly Sirett and I’m the new Supervising Librarian at the Rosemount branch of the Ottawa Public Library. […]

I’m writing to introduce myself, provide an update on the Rosemount branch, and to connect with your organization. To tell you a bit about myself, I have been working at the OPL since 2014, most recently as the Coordinator of the Sunnyside branch in Old Ottawa South. I live in Hintonburg, love this neighbourhood and am excited to be working in this community.

As you may know, the Rosemount branch temporarily closed its permanent location (at 18 Rosemount) in Spring 2019 for major renovations. During the renovations, the branch operated out of a temporary location on Wellington Street. Like for everyone else, COVID has caused to major changes in Library services. Since July, Rosemount has been offering holds pick up and returns in a variety of ways, depending on provincial regulations. We moved back into our permanent location at 18 Rosemount in early December. While we are operating only on the first floor of the building & with limited services (currently curbside holds pick up and returns), staff are very happy to be back “home”! Rosemount Library Reopening – December 3

In case you aren’t on the library mailing list, the Ottawa Public Library has just announced that the Rosemount branch renovations have been finished enough to allow opening of the first floor for just returns and picking up books on hold. Other services will come later. The Rosemount Temporary Location will close on Saturday, November 21.

Rosemount Library Curbside Service – July 27

In case you didn’t get this as part of your library membership, the temporary location for Rosemount (near the bowling alley) is opening on July 27th, though appointments are needed to pick up the books you put on hold…

Rosemount Temporary Location – Returns Drive and Curbside Service

Rosemount (temporary location), will be offering a curbside returns and holds pickup service starting Monday, July 27, following these hours of operation:

  • Monday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Thursday: 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Friday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Sunday: CLOSED

SATURDAY, JULY 25 – With limited space at the temporary location and the high volume of materials that circulate from this branch, we will be holding a one-day RETURN drive, accepting curbside returns of library materials. We invite you to come out on Saturday, July 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the north corner of Parkdale Park (corner of Hamilton and Armstrong) to return your library items.

Rosemount Revitalization Open House – December 13, 15

Invitation: Open House for Rosemount Revitalization

Ottawa Public Library invites members of the community, partners, and customers of OPL’s Rosemount branch to view preliminary designs for revitalizing and improving the 100-year-old branch.

There will be two Open House sessions at the Rosemount branch:

  • Thursday, December 13 from 6 to 8 pm
  • Saturday, December 15 from noon to 2 pm

The branch is located at 18 Rosemount Avenue. Registration is not required.

OPL is working with local design firm +VG Architects, who have been engaged to conduct the revitalization, including public consultation to ensure community needs are met. The preliminary designs reflect input and suggestions from the public, further to consultation online and in person in October 2018. Members of the public will be able to meet the architects and OPL staff, ask questions and share comments about the most recent design.

Designs will be finalized in the coming months and presented to the OPL Board in February.

Construction work is expected to begin in spring 2019 for completion in late 2019 during which Library services will be provided at a nearby temporary location.

The Future of Ottawa’s Rosemount Library is NOW!

The revitalization of the Rosemount Branch of the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) begins this Wednesday evening, October 3rd, from 6 to 8 pm at the Rosemount Branch Library (18 Rosemount Ave). The community is invited to meet with the architects to provide input at an OPEN HOUSE. The Rosemount Expansion and Development (READ) community group believes now is the crucial time for the Kitchissippi community to have their say. The revitalization is urgently needed to ensure that Rosemount will meet the demands of the vibrant, growing Kitchissippi neighbourhood. READ’s hope is that the library will be redesigned so it becomes an innovative, interactive and integrated community hub.

Rosemount Library Update

Good evening,

We are writing to update the community associations in the Rosemount catchment area on the status of the library’s redevelopment.

In October, the OPL Board made the unfortunate decision to renovate rather than expand the Rosemount Library. READ is disappointed with this result. In our view, the community is already underserved and a superficial renovation does not address the community’s current and future needs.

Dear Community Association Contacts for READ and Community Association Presidents,

Happy New Year and thanks again so much for your support and participation to date in supporting the Rosemount Library redevelopment efforts. This is a brief update from READ regarding the Rosemount library branch.

On December 14th, city council passed the Ottawa Public Library’s 2017 budget. That budget included OPL’s decision to suspend any renovation planning for Rosemount while they conduct a business case during the first half of 2017. This was the decision READ and Councillor Leiper were advocating for as it means that OPL will look at the viability of building a new (expanded!) Rosemount. READ continues to be active as there is still much more work to do. We have just sent OPL staff the following three considerations we recommend they include as part of the business case:

  • Size: Given data comparison with similar branches and community consultation feedback, there is strong argument for a new Rosemount Library to be at least 10,000sqft, even more with the current population plus expected projections. Thus, READ strongly recommends that the OPL look at 10,000sqft as the minimum and 12,500 sqft.or more as the real need.
  • Various partnership models: We know that the OPL as built library branches as part of to community and/or civic centres (St-Laurent, Beaverbrook, Greely, Constance Bay, Nepean Centrepointe etc) – we support this civic partnership approach. Additionally, we urge the OPL to consider partnerships in other public sector forms, particularly with affordable housing as this could greatly lower costs (building/maintenance) and could result in federal infrastructure money targeted at such projects. (We know our local MP is supportive of this idea.)
  • Ongoing community engagement: We encourage the OPL to engage with READ, Community Associations, and the wider community when continuing to research possibilities and plans for Rosemount. As community members, we have insight and information of use to the OPL to create a successful Business Plan and library in what is a more challenging part of the city (the urban core).

Essentially, we want to encourage OPL to continue to work towards making a greatly expanded Rosemount happen and that the community can help facilitate that process.
