Scott / O-Train / Albert Pathway Safety Audit – April 24

Subject: Fwd: Pathway Safety Audit Apr 24
Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2014 18:22:30 -0400
From: Heather Pearl <hpearl2012@gmail.com>

I suggest that we post this request and poster on our web site. Many years ago I was involved in helping to make arrangements and review the report for a safety audit that was done for Tunney’s Pasture. A safety audit creates a rational basis for highlighting and correcting problems.

Subject: Pathway Safety Audit Apr 24

We need volunteers to help with a Safety Audit of the Multi-Use Pathways on the north side of Scott and Albert streets and the proposed new multi-use pathway on the north side of Bayview Transitway Station – that will go through the Bayview Yards.

This audit is being done with the Women’s Initiatives for Safer Environments. (see attached).

The Pedestrian & Cycling Safety Audit done by RTG last year has still not been released despite repeated request. We do not know who did it, when or what criteria were used. So we will do our own audits. The first is this safety audit.

So I am looking for at least 12 women to help with this audit. Men are welcome too but we particularly want women. There will be a fair amount of walking for some of the areas.

Date: Thur Apr 24 – rain or shine
Time: 7:15pm to get instructions and audit forms
Audit start: about 8pm– when it is dark
7:15pm Meeting Place for instructions: to be determined.

This audit needs to be done in the dark. So it will start about 8pm. We will split into groups of 3 – 1 person will be the recorder. Please bring flashlights so the recorder can see what they are writing.

Group 1 – will look at the area for the proposed path from Bayview ( north of Scott)
Group 2 – will look at the area for the proposed path from the O-Train
Group 3 – will look at the multi-use path on the north side of Scott from Bayview to Holland
Group 4 – will look at the multi-use path on the north side of Albert from Bayview to Empress

If we have enough people we can split the area for group 3 & 4 into an A & B – so the walk is not so long.

I will send the info and evaluation criteria out once I know who is able to help.

Please reply if you are able to come and help.

Cheryl

Sorry if you get this more than once.

Addendum to Mosque Site Plan

This is an addendum to the Update on Ottawa Mosque Site and Landscape Plans post.

Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2014 00:51:27 +0000
From: CoChair1

Accompanying the approval of a site plan is a by-law amendment to allow commercial parking on the original mosque lands (about 22 spaces I believe).  Everyone within 120 metres of the property will be receiving a written notice of this by-law when it proceeds to City Council.

There is a very long history related to commercial parking for Tunney’s Pasture employees at the Ottawa Mosque (which went on for many years).  In a nutshell, we managed to have covenants put on their purchase of the new land (which was formerly leased from the federal government) to disallow commercial parking for a period of 20 years from the 2007 transaction date.  However, the city regulations did allow them to request commercial parking on their previously owned much smaller lot, which they did, and which we agreed to (as the NW church had a similar small volume of commercial parking).  This was a compromise, as a result of a lot of public process and negotiation which CPCA was involved with.

Update on Ottawa Mosque Site and Landscape Plans

This is an update to last year’s May 25th notice.

[Ottawa Mosque (Ottawa Muslim Association), photo by Muhammad Ghouri]

  • Last May, we were notified that the previously approved site plan and landscape plan for the Ottawa Mosque on 251 Northwestern, which had lapsed due to lack of funds, would go forward.
  • At that time, we posted the site and landscape plans and the following information on the web site.
    • Part B on the landscape plan pertains to the new lands, which are not currently landscaped.
    • The plan is to landscape them now and also to build catch basins.
    • Since this was previously reviewed and approved, including by Champlain Park Community Association (CPCA), the City of Ottawa does not feel another public review is required.
    • However, at our request, they did allow our CPCA Development Committee to view it again, as it has been dormant since 2008.
    • The CPCA Development Committee thinks the attached landscape plan, which includes paving, parking space markings and plantings, including a variety of trees, will greatly enhance the site.
  • The plans now are due to go to City Council for final approval.

Spring Cleanup 2014 – May 3

LIFE’S MESSY.

MAY 3 WE CLEAN IT UP.

Champlain Park is looking for volunteers for our annual Spring Cleanup. The snow is finally melting, and trash accumulated over a long winter has started to appear.

The cleanup, part of the City’s Cleaning the Capital campaign, is a chance for neighbours of all ages – kids, teens, and adults – to get together, say hello, and help spruce up the neighbourhood. Last year 33 people showed up – a wonderful turnout.

We’ll meet at the fieldhouse on Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m. Juice, coffee, and cookies will be served. There is a map so that people can choose an area to work on. We’ll wrap up by noon. In case of rain, we’ll meet instead on Sunday, May 4.

The designated cleanup areas are the south side of Premier above the transitway; the boulevard on Northwestern and the path at its north end; and the areas along the fence on Patricia and Pontiac. It can also include the area along the river at the foot of Carleton, or any other public spaces you think could use some help.

We recommend wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts, appropriate footwear and gloves. The City will provide garbage bags.

If you have any questions or suggestions, call Andrea Murphy or Ian Reid at 613-715-9504.

Meeting on Home Mail Delivery – April 9

Subject: FW: Kitchissippi Town Hall on Defending Home Mail Delivery, Wed Apr 9, 7pm
Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2014 13:30:38 +0000
From: CoChair1

Short notice, as event is tonight but it just came.

Kitchissippi Town Hall:
Defend Our Home Mail Delivery!

Wednesday, April 9th, 7:00pm
Hintonburg Community Centre
1064 Wellington St.

Canada Post announced on December 11 that all door-to-door delivery would be terminated across Canada, something that no country has ever done. Their plan begins as early as this fall in Kanata. Will Kitchissippi be next?

This is an issue that Kitchissippi / Ward 15 residents care deeply about. All residents, but especially seniors and persons with disabilities, depend on and benefit from home mail delivery. A growing number of mayors, city councils, and other elected leaders are expressing their opposition to Canada Post’s announcement.

Please come out to attend this open, Town Hall meeting to discuss what is happening, how our municipal and other elected representatives have responded, and what we might do in the coming months to defend OUR home delivery.

Speakers at the event will include:

NICK APLIN (81-year-old Kitchissippi senior & activist)
PETER DENLEY (CUPW)
SHELLIE BIRD (Kitchissippi resident with Solidarity Against Austerity)

Organized by Solidarity Against Austerity
