Traffic cones and other orange coloured things (not pumpkins!) are going up around the Island Park Drive and Clearview Avenue intersection. Could it be that the traffic light is being installed? Here’s the view from this morning, with some more traffic control equipment trucks arriving moments later, perhaps to add more traffic detour barrels.
Clearview and Island Park Drive Traffic Light News Update
From our city councillor Jeff Leiper’s newsletter of October 29 2021:
IPD/Clearview pedestrian crossing
My most recent understanding of when the IPD/Clearview pedestrian crossing will go in is that the contractor is now ready and that they are waiting for a road cut permit. My office is advocating for an expedition of that. We’ll see.

Apple Tree Movers Wanted – October 28
On Apples, Pick-up Trucks and Food Security
The Community Forest project needs a pick-up truck or vehicle with a trailer to collect a MacIntosh apple tree from the Just Food Farm in Blackburn Hamlet (near Orleans) and bring it to the neighbourhood. Thursday afternoon (October 28) or Friday during the day would be ideal. If you have access to truck or trailer, please contact Daniel Buckles (613-807-8048).
The apple will be the last planting of the season in the new terraces at Champlain Park, along with two American Hazelnuts (a native shrub with showy flowers and edible nuts). Our Community Forest will not only showcase a native “Tiny Forest” east along Pontiac, a “Native Pollinator Garden” at the entrance to the river, and a glimpse at “futures forests” in our warming world, but also options for “Food Forests” in urban environments.
“Where will our food come from?” is a question posed in the context of Ottawa’s new Official Plan in an opinion piece by a neighbour you might find of interest here.
Update from the “Pit Crew” of Champlain Park.
Clearview and Island Park Drive Traffic Light News Update
From our city councillor Jeff Leiper’s newsletter today:
IPD/Clearview pedestrian crossing
I’ve been fielding a few questions about when the signalized pedestrian crossing is expected to be completed. It’s a very good question. We’ve been given multiple dates by the City that have all fallen through. I’ve raised my concern over the length of time it’s taking to accomplish this with senior staff and the latest timeframe we’ve been given is from mid- to the end-of-October. I’m treating that with a grain of salt. What we do know is that there’s a finalized work order in place, but that materials are apparently on back order. The crossing is coming. I just don’t know when.
Champlain Park Real Estate History
Dave Allston has written an interesting piece in the Kitchissippi Times on the history of Champlain Park’s land ownership and development. A key element was getting Island Park Drive to cross the river here, making Robert H. Cowley’s real estate go up in value. But that came after many years of delays and problems.
The Passing of John Sadler
Our neighbour on Daniel Avenue, John Sadler, has passed away this spring. I often stopped for a pleasant chat with him when I was walking by and he was outside working on his property or washing his immaculate white car. Kelly wrote a good article about him in the Ottawa Citizen:
