Secure your windows to prevent injury

This week, the Ottawa Police responded to a call where a child fell from an open window and suffered injury. With the warmer weather upon us, there is a stronger likelihood that windows are open, creating a safety risk potential for children to fall out.

It is important to secure access to your windows. Here are some safety tips to keep children safe:

  • Lock your window closed at all times when you cannot supervise a small child around this falling hazard
  • Install window guards
  • Put up window stoppers
  • Move furniture away from windows (there are more accidents when furniture is near a window).
  • Remove the cranks from crank-open windows to keep kids from opening them.

To make a police report:

  • Contact Cst. Darren Joseph directly (west of O-Train, Line 2) at josephd@ottawapolice.ca or 613-236-1222, ext. 5871.
  • Contact Cst. Stephanie Lemieux directly (east of O-Train, Line 2) at lemieuxs@ottawapolice.ca or 613-236-1222, ext. 5290

Blood Moon Viewing – May 15

Blood Moon Viewing

  • At Champlain Park (NCC woods end, former Pontiac Street)
  • Sunday, May 15 (10pm – midnight, weather permitting) to view the total lunar eclipse.

This is a free event. You do not need to bring anything but your curiosity, and perhaps a folding chair. You are of course welcome to bring a telescope or binoculars and snacks. Don Monet will set up his 8 inch Ritchy-Cretien telescope which will be open to all on site. The actual eclipse is total by 11:30 it lasts this way until 1 am. This is the longest total lunar eclipse that Canadians have been able to see in 15 years. Astronomers call it the Blood Moon because when it is eclipsed by our earth shadow it is still visible, but turns a darkish red colour, due to the many sunsets surrounding the earth that collectively shine their colour on the eclipsed moon. Hope to see you there!

Hintonburg Fundraiser against New High-rise

via Heather…

The Hintonburg Community Association is going to the Ontario Land Tribunal to appeal a decision by City Planning Committee to allow a developer to put up 12 storeys on a block of Wellington that is zoned for six storeys. It seems that this decision could have serious implications for planning and development in neighbouring communities like Champlain Park. Here is the fundraising poster with links to details about this appeal:

Ottawa Fly Fishers Swap Meet – May 5

From that comment from the organizer, it looks like it has been moved from the 3rd to the 5th due to weather…

The Ottawa Fly Fishing Society is having a members swap meet and social evening on Tuesday, May 3rd.

It’s in Champlain Park at the fieldhouse (and outside so they have space to test equipment), from 6pm to 8:30pm or full dark. Neighbourhood people are welcome too.

Spring Cleanup 2022 Wrapup

The 2022 Spring Clean Up was once again a great success with nearly 50 participants! Folks had lots of fun collecting trash to keep the neighbourhood clean while chatting with friends and neighbours and enjoying some delicious doughnuts!

We would like to address a heartfelt thank you to every one who contributed by showing up on Saturday morning despite the cool grey day to volunteer, give out gloves and garbage bags and build community spirit. We would also like to thank the Champlain Park Community Association for funding the snacks.

Wishing everyone a happy spring,

Kris, Eirene and Nick
