Good afternoon,

It has been another beautiful week, and with the Province moving forward with Phase 2 of re-opening, more of us are going out.  However, we still all need to stay safe and respect social distancing.

Ottawa Public Health is recommending everyone to wear a mask where physical distancing is not easy to maintain.  For more information on direction from Ottawa Public Health please check out their website: https://www.ottawapublichealth.ca/en/public-health-topics/masks.aspx?utm_source=OPH&utm_medium=Friendly_URL&utm_campaign=Coronavirus&utm_content=Friendly_URL

Although many of our neighbours can access and purchase cloth masks, there are thousands in our community who cannot.  The Human Needs Task Force is looking for donations of cloth masks to distribute to residents who have no other means. These masks will be distributed throughout the city to community partners who will connect with people who have no other means of accessing a cloth mask.

New Pilot Project Provides Increased Space for Outdoor Well-Being

Today, the National Capital Commission (NCC) is announcing an additional pilot project to partially close both the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway and the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway to motor vehicle traffic on weekends. The purpose of the project is to provide more outdoor space for residents to exercise while practising safe physical distancing.

HNTF Update for 2020-05-11

Here are a few fact sheets from the Human Needs Task Force, created by the City of Ottawa to help with the COVID-19 emergency. This week’s update (possibly there will be an update each week, let us know in the comments if it becomes too much or is too little) has the following documents:

  1. The ‘Who to Call’ document helps residents to differentiate between 211, 311 and 911. As you will see, this document is available in several languages.
  2. The Mental Health Resources for Seniors was created by our partners at Ottawa Public Health and has been shared during outreach efforts in Ottawa Community Housing buildings across the city
  3. The Food Fact Sheet offers a list of resources to support those who are, or may know someone who is, needing to access food

Mosque Call to Prayer

Mosque noise exemption

As a sign of solidarity and unity, I was pleased yesterday to work with the Mayor’s office and By-law to provide a noise exemption to the Ottawa Mosque to be allowed to broadcast the evening call to prayer for up to five minutes during Ramadan (the last evening of which is May 23). I am assured that the noise level will be very reasonable and am confident this won’t be a disruption in the community. My thoughts are with those celebrating this month who can’t be with each other for iftar dinners and prayer. I’ll be stopping by the Mosque tomorrow to thank volunteers who continue to provide help to the Parkdale Food Centre.
