Gas Leak on Scott Street

There are several reports of a gas leak on Scott Street east of Island park. Possibly the construction people hit the wrong pipe, or the ground subsided and broke a gas pipe after sewer work. Anyway, whatever the cause, the closest houses have been evacuated and you should use some other street to get to the neighbourhood (Scott is closed from Northwestern westward).

The NCC says that the SJAM parkway will be closed this weekend (between Island Park and Booth), for a bridge replacement in the LeBreton Flats area. This includes the “pilot” project of letting people walk & bike on the westbound lanes on the weekend, but not this weekend. Their press release text:

Construction in the Neighbourhood

A few photos from near the neighbourhood yesterday…

[20200819 New Sidewalk at Scott and IPD] — New sidewalk beside the transitway is now ready for the public (saw people on it the day after). Dug up, re-gravelled underneath and paved. It seems slightly wider, or maybe that’s the new painted lane line. But no more brick speed stripes (or whatever you call those lines across the path with spacing decreasing closer to an intersection). Also no more 1cm diameter holes from missing stones in the old asphalt, so luggage wheels will be able to survive.

[20200819 Scott Eastbound Under Construction at IPD] — Scott Street eastbound is now all dug up from Island Park Drive eastwards, for sewer maintenance. Best bet to get into the neighbourhood is go westbound on Scott and turn right at a bridge, or come north on Carleton and take advantage of the traffic lights there.

Scott Street Sewer Construction Open House – February 20

You probably have already received the paper flyer from the city about the partial closing of Scott street this summer and fall. There’s also an open house meeting to consult the public on Thursday at 6:30 to 8:30pm (presentation starts at 7pm) at the Churchill Seniors Centre.

Scott & SJAM Parkway Closures

This is from the city of Ottawa:

Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway – On weekdays, until Friday, June 7, there will be intermittent off-peak lane closures on Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway, between 9:30 am and 3 pm. The closures are for tree clearing and will be between Dominion and Cleary avenues.

Scott Street – From Monday, June 3 to Friday June 14, weather-permitting, Scott Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction, during off-peak hours between Churchill Avenue North and Smirle Avenue as part of the Scott Street Sewer and Watermain Rehabilitation Project.

Vision Zero Safety Program

Councillor Jeff Leiper is requesting our support to implement a Vision Zero Program in Ottawa, to eliminate traffic fatalities and injuries.

Two motions are attached, that Councillor Leiper proposes to present to Council. One is for a comprehensive Vision Zero strategy. The other is a proposal to use the Federal Government’s one time increase in the share of the gas tax, which is being rebated to Municipalities, to implement safe cycling infrastructure. Jeff encourages residents to write to the Mayor and Councillors to support these motions, which will be debated by City Council.

Water Main Break at Keyworth and Sunnymede

I just got back from a walk to find out why there was a large pile of ice at the bottom of our driveway on Daniel Avenue. Turns out the water main has sprung a leak in the middle of the Keyworth and Sunnymede intersection. Water is pouring out of cracks in the road, making a nice little brook about 1m wide and 2cm deep, flowing quickly west down Sunnymede (there’s a slope there). It was flowing into Daniel Avenue earlier this morning and froze up along the gutter side of the street. Since then, city crews have opened up storm drains closer to the leak and have closed off Keyworth, with signs at the Amanda and Clearview ends saying road closed, local traffic only. Keyworth buses have been diverted to Daniel. Thanks to the city crews for their quick action; hope repairs go smoothly.
