Please see the message below or the attached press release sent on behalf of the Rosemount Expansion and Development Group (READ).

The Future of Ottawa’s Rosemount Library is NOW!

The revitalization of the Rosemount Branch of the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) begins this Wednesday evening, October 3rd, from 6 to 8 pm at the Rosemount Branch Library (18 Rosemount Ave). The community is invited to meet with the architects to provide input at an OPEN HOUSE. The Rosemount Expansion and Development (READ) community group believes now is the crucial time for the Kitchissippi community to have their say. The revitalization is urgently needed to ensure that Rosemount will meet the demands of the vibrant, growing Kitchissippi neighbourhood. READ’s hope is that the library will be redesigned so it becomes an innovative, interactive and integrated community hub.

Rosemount Library Branch Renewal

Date: Tue, 7 Apr 2015 10:44:32 -0400
Subject: Rosemount Library Branch
From: rvl2701@gmail.com

The Rosemount library branch is the local library for thousands of near west Ottawans. It is one of the busiest branches in the city. It is also one of the least up to date. It was built in 1918 and last renewed in 1982.

It is small, busy, well loved, crowded…and nearly obsolete. The Ottawa Library Board recognized this in 2012, placing Rosemount second only to the main branch as a priority for renewal. But there are still no plans for that renewal. If it is to continue to serve our communities we need to work together, and with the Library Board, to ensure action.

The Rosemount Expansion and Development (READ) group has been formed by concerned local citizens to make this happen. READ has representatives of several of our local community associations as well as library users at large as members. It is chaired by Richard Van Loon – that’s me – and has been meeting monthly since November. It has set out objectives which are attached, as is a fact sheet prepared by the group.

There are 13 community associations in the area served by the branch. READ needs their support if it is to succeed. Some of you are already active in this work. This note is to request the support of those who are not yet involved and to express the need for all of us to continue to work on this project.

We would like to have representatives of every Community Association in our area as members of READ. To date we have representatives from Civic Hospital, Carlington, Dalhousie, Hintonburg, Wellington Village and Westboro Beach. Our next meeting is Monday April 13 in the basement of the Hintonburg Community Centre at 1064 Wellington St. Future meetings will be on the second Monday of each month at locations to be announced.

READ also requests that you post our objectives and our fact sheet on your web site, together with this note if you think it appropriate.

I, or another member of READ, will also be pleased to meet with your association at one of your upcoming meetings to explain further what we are doing and to, hopefully, elicit your strong endorsement and support. If this is of interest to your association please just get in touch with me by return email.

Near West Accommodation Review – October 24

Near West Accommodation Review

Impacted Schools are

Elmdale Public School
Devonshire Public School
Connaught Public School
Hilson Public School
Fisher Park Public School

The final Public Meeting regarding the Near West Accommodation Review will be on Thursday October 24th at 7 pm in the auditorium at Fisher Park Public School.

There are still several potential solutions to the overcrowding issues at Elmdale and Devonshire but they differ somewhat from the ones presented in June. Carefully evaluate the Scenarios, provide us, and the Board, with questions and feedback, to NearWestReviewPublicComments2@ocdsb.ca AND nearwest.champlain.park@gmail.com

ALL Scenarios have Elmdale’s ENG removed from Elmdale. The program splits east to Connaught (all children south of the Queensway) and west (all children north of the Queensway) to Hilson.

The Working Group recognizes that none of the scenarios are ideal and there remains elements that remain an issue. The working group is a group of community volunteers who have spent countless hours discussing the issues and possibilities. It has not been an easy process.

Please see the Board’s website for all meeting information and slides from the previous presentation. http://www.ocdsb.ca/sch/as/Pages/NearWest.aspx

Calling all young artists for Young at Art 2013

Visual artists between 12 to 19 years of age as of January 1, 2013 who live or go to school in Ottawa are eligible to enter Young at Art.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if a young artist from Champlain Park won this?

Young at Art is a juried art exhibition that brings the work of young visual artists to local art galleries across the City of Ottawa. The exhibition, held annually since 1996, represents a tremendous opportunity for the public exhibition and recognition of the creative efforts of these young local artists. Creators of accepted works will have their pieces displayed in a community gallery – often near where they live – and are eligible for a number of prizes and awards contributed by the City of Ottawa and Young at Art Sponsors.

For deadlines, registration, and program details please refer to the Young at Art Details

Someone had told me about this, and I suggest it gets wider distribution, as I don’t see why it has to be an exec member.  I would invite any interested community member to go ahead and respond to this invitation.
