Pollinator Garden is Open

The Champlain Park Community Association is pleased to welcome one and all to our neighbourhood’s public Pollinator Garden. Come enjoy the flowers and try to spot the Monarch Butterflies. Access can be gained on the side of the garden facing Pontiac St. Please remain on the pathways when visiting; feel free to bring some water for the plants.

While in the area you can also visit the new Rain Garden, Planters, and our nascent mini-forests along Pontiac St. So much to see-and it will only get even better with time.

Many thanks to our Committee green thumbs for all their hard work in curating, planting and caring for these wonderful additions to our neighbourhood-special thanks to Kris, John, Catherine, Daniel, Joscelyn and all of our Planter Caretakers!

Heads Up and Save the Date!

A Company of Fools returns to Champlain Park this summer.

Bring your own chairs, your snacks and drinks, family and friends. The actors request that you pay what you can in cash when they pass the hat at the end of the play. We welcome them back to our park on the 32nd anniversary of their outdoor summer entertainment program in City of Ottawa parks!

OC Transpo Scott Street Bus Detour

Scott St. Bus Detour in effect starting today

The Transitway will permanently close between Tunney’s Pasture and Dominion Stations to allow for construction of the Stage 2 O-Train extensions to Algonquin and Moodie Stations. The closures and bus detours will be implemented in phases starting Thursday, June 23, until Sunday, June 26. There will be temporary bus stop and station access adjustments at Tunney’s Pasture Station to accommodate the transition to the new detour routing. Customers travelling during the transition period should check octranspo.com for details on bus stop changes and detours.

  • Buses will travel on Scott Street.
  • At Westboro Station customers will use temporary bus platforms on Scott Street. The station roadway and building will be closed.
  • Routes 62 and 75 will provide service to a pair of stops on Scott Street at Island Park Drive. No other detoured bus routes will serve these stops.
  • At Dominion Station, customers will use new temporary bus platforms on the realigned temporary Transitway.

At Dominion, Westboro, Tunney’s Pasture and Iris stations, signage will help direct customers to the interim access points and bus stops, and OC Transpo staff will be on site over the first number of days to assist. For the latest detour information, visit octranspo.com/alerts.

Daniel Buckles published today an OPED in the Ottawa Citizen on the loss of the Patricia Avenue “Party Tree” and the importance of heritage trees and planting native/near-native species to the urban canopy. The pre-confederation tree was irreparably damaged in last month’s big derecho storm. Please share as you see fit.

Wading Pool Opening – June 26

Summer time around the pool is here!

Our wading pool will open for the season starting on June 26, 2022 (weather dependent) and run until August 22. It’s usually open noonish until around dinner time, closed on Wednesdays. The city’s Wading Pool Information Page has more information and a map. There may be Covid-19 restrictions, if conditions warrant. The opening of wading pools is dependent on the weather. If the weather looks uncertain, call the Seasonal Recreation Office at 613-580-2590 to find out if the wading pool is open that day.

Visitors are reminded to abide by admission requirements and water safety rules.

Tunney’s Pasture Redevelopment Q&A – June 20

Tunney’s Pasture Redevelopment Project: Invitation to Participate

Canada Lands Company (CLC) and Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) were very pleased to see the high degree of participation in our workshops of May 25 and 26, during which attendees provided input into the development of “community values” that will inform the redevelopment of Tunney’s Pasture.

And, we would also like to give members of the community another opportunity to have their questions answered during a virtual “Questions and Answers Coffee House” meeting that we will hold from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20. Patricia Oak Celebration – June 14

Celebration of life

Patricia Avenue neighbours invite one and all to gather opposite 203 Patricia Avenue to celebrate the life of an old-growth burr oak on the street. It is known as “The Party Tree” because for years the shade of the tree hosted the Patricia Avenue Labour Day street party.

The tree is being removed by Forestry Services on Wednesday, June 15 because it was irreparably damaged by the recent fierce storm (derecho).

Drop by tomorrow (Tuesday, June 14) between 7 and 8 pm, to share stories with neighbours about this and other significant trees. The Patricia Bur Oak is one of only a handful of pre-confederation trees in the neighbourhood, linked genetically to the ancient oak forest that developed along this stretch of the Ottawa River some 9,000 years ago (for details on the history, see https://www.champlainoaks.net/ and in particular https://www.champlainoaks.net/post/ode-to-the-party-tree).
