NCC Forest Feedback

Public consultation on the NCC Forest Strategy

The National Capital Commission (NCC) invites you to participate in an online public consultation on its Forest Strategy.

This strategy will guide how the NCC manages forests and trees on its lands. It will align our efforts, and prepare us to meet current and future challenges. Previous rounds of public consultation on the strategy were held in June and October 2019. We are now in the final phase of developing this strategy.

Through this online consultation, you’ll have an opportunity to:

  • learn about the context of the strategy, including the challenges affecting our trees and forests;
  • review the strategy’s proposed vision, goals, long-term objectives and short-term actions;
  • read the full draft of the strategy; and
  • provide feedback on the strategy before it is finalized.

We invite you to provide your input via the comment box on the Forest Strategy webpage from February 16 to March 3, 2021.

SJAM Winter Trail – Christmas Tree Reuse

The SJAM Winter Trail is collecting cleaned up Christmas Trees for use as a windbreak. Yes, your #xmas2020 tree still have a lot more lovin’ to give! Your little sweet heart can spend the rest of the winter sheltering the wind and making this rest area, or what we call the #NordicVillage, a winter’s paradise. @NCC_CCN

We are accepting your recycled Christmas Trees at 2 locations:

Champlain Park

Many thanks, these trees will be further recycled as mulch after the winter season.

Discarded Syringes

A number of Kitchissippi Community Associations report that residents have found discarded syringes in their neighbourhoods. The reports are broadly based, with some homeowners even having found needles on their own properties. Please report immediately to the NCC or the City (and c.c. the CPCA Board for our information) if you see discarded syringes.

New Pilot Project Provides Increased Space for Outdoor Well-Being

Today, the National Capital Commission (NCC) is announcing an additional pilot project to partially close both the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway and the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway to motor vehicle traffic on weekends. The purpose of the project is to provide more outdoor space for residents to exercise while practising safe physical distancing.

Community Garden for Kitchissippi – November 25

Large community garden likely for Kitchissippi – now looking for volunteers!

Are you a fan of community gardens? Do you have some time to spare and are interested in helping to launch a large allotment garden in Kitchissippi?

The Goldenrod Community Garden is a group of volunteers working to establish a large 60 plot garden on NCC land just north of Tunney’s Pasture. While we don’t yet have approval, we are encouraged by recent events as the NCC invited us to apply and we are currently going through their formal process. Our hope is to launch the garden in Spring 2020.

Pontiac De-paving Day Photo Review

Community Effort to Remove Pavement on Pontiac Street and Reclaim Paradise!!

Last Saturday, a family-friendly event was led by Councillor Jeff Leiper to de-pave one block of Pontiac Street and to re-connect the green space of Champlain Park directly to NCC lands accessing the Ottawa river.

The Councillor received sponsorship from the City with funds from cash-in-lieu of parkland money and a small grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Energetic community volunteers showed up to dig up sections of pavement and transfer them to City dumpsters. The volunteers were organized by Enviro Centre and Champlain Park Community Association, with coffee from Bridgehead and bagels from the Ottawa Bagel Shop.

In the near future, the City workers will finish digging the gravel base, adding soil, and seeding the area. The NCC will remove the fence and gravel on their side. Volunteers plan to landscape the NCC land with native species of ground cover, shrubs and trees. As Joni Mitchell sang in her song “Big Yellow Taxi”, “you don’t know what you’ve got, ’till it’s gone”. It’s not often a parking lot gets turned into parkland!

National Tree Day – September 25

Grade 2 and 3 children at St. George Catholic School in our neighbourhood will celebrate National Tree Day at 1:15 pm this Wednesday by planting a tree on the Pontiac side of the main school yard. Join us that same day from 4:30 to 6:30 pm to plant a tree (or two) in “the Little Woods” at Patricia and Clearview. Weather permitting, tree planting will continue in the NCC forest near the school on Saturday, from 10 till noon. Bring your shovel and/or a pick!

For those interested in the bigger picture, attend a Tree Canada event at the Museum of Nature, where the NCC, the City of Ottawa and the Ville de Gatineau will present the results of a tree canopy assessment. This report on the extent of the current tree canopy is meant to support planning for the future of urban forestry in the region.
