Amy (Kempster) Steele Life Celebration – May 20

A Celebration of Life for Amy (Steele) Kempster will take place at 11:00 am Friday, May 20 at Hulse, Playfair, & McGarry, Central Chapel, 315 McLeod St.

Followed by a reception. About 1:30 pm family and friends will leave for the Auld KirK Cemetery in Almonte.

Visitation from 6-8pm, Thursday, May 19. A notice will appear in the Citizen on Saturday.

Kitchissippi Community-wide Garage Sale on Saturday June 4 2022

Start getting those treasures ready!

The annual community-wide garage sale is just around the corner, which is exactly where you hope all those treasures will end up!

The sale generally begins at 8 a.m. and usually winds up about 1 p.m.

Rain date is Sunday June 5.

Residents of other community associations in Kitchissippi Ward will be holding their sale on the same day.

Leftover treasures

Should you have any leftover gems, keep in mind that the following weekend is not Ottawa’s Spring Give Away Weekend (the city has discontinued it). Though you may still put things out on the afternoon of the sale and mark them as Free, or use one of the matchmaking services to find someone who wants your items.

In 2014, the National Capital Commission finalized and endorsed the Tunney’s Pasture Master Plan (TPMP). Ecology Ottawa Tree Giveaway + Stephen Lewis Foundation Fundraising Plant Sale

Ecology Ottawa is embarking on their largest tree giveaway in Ottawa’s history, and we’re involved!
Help re-plant Ottawa’s urban forest by picking up one of 20,000 seedlings that are looking for new homes on your private property.

You can pick up some by-donation perennials for your garden while you’re here, and help the Unitarian GoGos raise money for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Choral Concert: The Road Home

FirstU’s singers are so excited to be home again and presenting “The Road Home”, our first concert in over two years!
Join us on Saturday, May 14 at 4pm for an hour-long live, in person performance featuring our contemporary Fusion ensemble, our Three Rivers Singers women’s ensemble, and our Chalice Choir, presenting music about community, resilience, and finding home.

Please Note: You must be fully vaccinated to enter our building and masks are required for attendees.

OWL Summer Camp – Registration Open!

July 4 – 8 (9am-4pm, daily)
$75 per child for the week – subsidies available upon request

Good news! First Unitarian is running OWL Summer Camp for both 10-11 year-olds AND 12-14 year-olds this July!

OWL day camp includes all the usual Summer Camp fun – art, games, and getting active outdoors – plus workshops that focus on “Our Whole Lives” topics like body image, consent education, cultivating healthy peer-to-peer relationships, and building communication skills.

The Champlain Park Environment Team Needs YOU!

The ‘green season’ is upon us and we need your help to care for and advance the environmental work we’re doing in our neighbourhood. We’ve got activities that suit all ages, physical / skill ability ranges, and energy levels! If you like ‘low tech’, and love trees, then we’ve got what you’re looking for.

All you have to do is register with us (https://champlainpark.org/environteers/) and then you will be free to work when you want, on any project we’ve got, for as long as you like – 5 mins or 5 weeks, we have a spot for you!

We’ll provide the coordination, an orientation session, and a ‘report back’ contact so we can track what is getting done. It’s almost too easy!

Some activities planned for this season in Champlain Woods and Champlain Park include:

  • ‘Adopt a Tree’ care program (May/June-spongy moth countermeasures featuring the ‘burlap wrap’ in the Park)
  • Invasive plant species control (garlic mustard, baby buckthorn, Japanese knotwood, dog strangling vine, etc)
  • Insect pest patrol and general care of new planting sites and the pollinator garden
  • New tree planting projects

To get involved, just go to the “Environ-teer Registration” link noted above. Once registered you will begin receiving notices about orientation sessions, work party updates, and any tasks that may require immediate attention. From that point, you are free to chip-in to our projects when you’re able.

Minors are welcome to participate – parental/guardian permission and supervision are currently required at the time/location of participation.

Blood Moon Viewing – May 15

Blood Moon Viewing

  • At Champlain Park (NCC woods end, former Pontiac Street)
  • Sunday, May 15 (10pm – midnight, weather permitting) to view the total lunar eclipse.

This is a free event. You do not need to bring anything but your curiosity, and perhaps a folding chair. You are of course welcome to bring a telescope or binoculars and snacks. Don Monet will set up his 8 inch Ritchy-Cretien telescope which will be open to all on site. The actual eclipse is total by 11:30 it lasts this way until 1 am. This is the longest total lunar eclipse that Canadians have been able to see in 15 years. Astronomers call it the Blood Moon because when it is eclipsed by our earth shadow it is still visible, but turns a darkish red colour, due to the many sunsets surrounding the earth that collectively shine their colour on the eclipsed moon.
