Hydro Ottawa’s 2017 Community Forum – We want your input!

Good afternoon,
Last year, we hosted our very first Community Forum to share information on our programs offered in your community as well as information on various initiatives. The forum gave Community Associations an opportunity to exchange views and ideas with Hydro Ottawa personnel in an open and interactive environment – and we are getting ready to do this again.

This spring, we will host our second Community Forum and we want to ensure you are part of the planning process — we want to hear from you!

We invite you to complete a short questionnaire so we can do our best to accommodate your schedule and ensure the information presented is relevant to your community.

We encourage you to take a few minutes and provide your feedback. Your input is important to us and we thank you in advance.

Forum communautaire 2017 d’Hydro Ottawa – Nous voulons connaître votre opinion!

Bonjour,

Hi Carol,

This is one idea — see attachment. I spoke to the Imam at the Mosque, as well as a leader of the Board; they both said that this action would be appreciated. If you’d be willing to use the CPCA list to get the word out, that would be great.

Peace,

Alex

Here’s a link to a Facebook event for the same action:

2. 3rd Annual Polar Plunge for Special Oympics

The Ottawa Police Service is honoured to host the 3rd Annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics taking place at Algonquin College (north side of ‘P’ Building) on Saturday, March 4, 2017 in partnership with the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run (OLETR).

The Polar Plunge takes place in several cities across Canada and raises much-needed funds for the athletes and families of Special Olympics Ontario.

“Make it a team building activity and get your coworkers, friends, family and teammates together to make a splash and help out some pretty amazing local athletes,” said Ottawa Police Constable Mike Edens, captain of Polar Plunge team ‘Shock and Thaw’.

Register online, collect donations, and track your fundraising progress.

Plunging begins at 9am! There is free parking at Algonquin College located at 1385 Woodroffe Avenue.

“The OLETR are Special Olympics Ontario’s strongest supporters. Events like the Polar Plunge bring communities together to empower athletes through the joy of sport,” stated Glenn MacDonell, President and CEO of Special Olympics Ontario.

Athletes range in age from children, youth to adults who have an intellectual disability. Sports and training programs are only possible through funds raised through initiatives like the Polar Plunge.

“These athletes are my heroes, truly,” said Ottawa Police Inspector John McGetrick. “Their perseverance and dedication to their sport, coupled with their enthusiasm and sportsmanship, makes for a really enjoyable team experience for athletes, as well as their families.”

About Special Olympics Ontario

Special Olympics Ontario is part of a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through transformative power and joy of sports. We empower people with intellectual disabilities to become accepted and valued members of their communities, which leads to a more respectful and inclusive society for all. Using sports as the catalyst and programming around health and education, Special Olympics is fighting inactivity, injustice and intolerance. Special Olympics encourages sports and fun, bringing people together and breaks down stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities through a unified sports approach.

3. OPS Gala raises $100,000

This evening, Ottawa Police Service Chief Charles Bordeleau will present two cheques, each totalling $50,000, to the Ottawa Distress Centre and the Youville Centre, at the Ottawa Police Services Board’s meeting. The cheques represent the total funds raised at the seventh annual Police Gala held on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the Shaw Centre.

The Ottawa Police has been hosting the Gala since 2010 and has raised $645,000 to date.

“Every year we celebrate not only our police service, but also those who work tirelessly to make this city one of the best places to live,” said Chief Charles Bordeleau. “The gala has a lasting impact beyond the event itself through the funds we raise for local charities that deliver much needed services and programs to the most vulnerable in our community.”

Applications from local registered charities interested in becoming the next charity of choice are currently being accepted. Interested applicants can complete and submit a Charitable Application Form. The deadline for applications is February 20, 2017.

The OPS would like to acknowledge this past year’s Gala sponsors for their commitment and leadership, particularly the two Platinum Sponsors, TELUS and The Barley Mow.

The eighth annual Police Gala will be held on Saturday, October 28, at the Shaw Centre. Tickets for this event will go on sale in the spring.

Champlain Park Community Offers Support to Ottawa Mosque

Subject: Champlain Park Community Offers Support to Ottawa Mosque.

Dear Imam Samy and Naeem Malik: In light of the sad news of a terrorist attack on the Islamic Centre in Quebec City we feel the need to offer our support to you, the Ottawa Muslim Community,at this time. Unfortunately, it is only a couple of months since we joined in a solidarity walk through Hintonburg after the vandalism of places of worship in November in Ottawa.

Once again, we will ask all of the residents in the Champlain Park Community to be vigilant and report quickly to police any suspicious activity in the area of the Ottawa Mosque.

At our Champlain Park Winter Carnival 2017, last Saturday, January 28, 2017, I was heartened to see neighbours of a variety of cultures drinking hot chocolate, taking sleigh rides, and listening to fiddle music. I could hear English, French, Arabic, and Chinese being spoken along with a lot of laughter. As we discussed in November, we should plan more of these multicultural family events.

Please contact us if you have ideas of how we can show support. The Champlain Park Community Association is ready to join with you to build a warm, welcoming community.

Sincerely,
Carol Arnason (613-729-6639)
Social Coordinator and Communications
Champlain Park Community Association

Winter Carnival Photos and Thanks

Champlain Park Families come out of hibernation to reconnect and to enjoy sleigh ride, outdoor rink, fiddle music, and chili at Winter Carnival 2017!!!

Carol Arnason, Social Committee Coordinator on the CPCA Executive, reports a large turnout of neighbours and a very successful party on Saturday afternoon, January 28, 2017. We welcomed visits from our elected representatives in all three levels of government: City Councillor Jeff Leiper, MPP Yasir Naqvi, and MP Catherine McKenna. Our Federal Environment Minister was judge of the Chili Cook-Off Contest and diplomatically celebrated all of the cooks until she awarded the Metro Gift card prize to Joscelyn Coolican, long time volunteer from Carleton Ave.

Thank you from the Champlain Park Community to the following enthusiastic volunteers who made it a memorable fun event:

  • Sarah Kotyck and Natalie Raffoul were the awesome organizers of Winter Carnival 2017.
  • Jim Kot had rink in great shape and Graydon ran outdoor activities.
  • Champlain Park Community Association sponsored free sleigh rides, free coffee and hot chocolate, and free entertainment.
  • Jason Keats, creator of balloon animals, kept the children amused.
  • Linda Landreville, Katie and Olivia Bolger, served food and hot drinks.
  • Chris and Sharon Kelly provided the sleigh rides.
  • Triple Trouble, Canterbury High School students, entertained with fiddles and step dancing.
  • Bridgehead supplied coffee and hot chocolate at a discount.
  • Neighbours donated chilis and baked goods for the lunch counter.

Park Planning Consultation – January 26, 28

From: “Mitchell, Fiona” <Fiona.Mitchell@ottawa.ca>

Subject: RE: Plan Your Parks! Kitchissippi Parks Participatory Plan – Consultation. Reminder: Round 2, Session 1 – Thursday, Jan 26 6:30- 9:00pm at Churchill Senior’s Centre. Session 2 – Saturday, Jan 28 1:00- 3:30pm at Tom Brown Arena

Good afternoon everyone,

You are receiving this e-mail either as a representative of your association or because you filled out the on-line survey in December and submitted your e-mail address in order to be kept up to date.

Thank you all so much for helping us spread the word for these consultation sessions, and for those of you who have been able to attend either session in Round 1, thank you as well for taking time to attend and submit your ideas. We are really enjoying the conversation so far, and are working towards a very strong vision for the future of our CIL funds. I wanted to reach out and send a quick reminder about the up-coming sessions for Round 2 of our Kitchissippi Parks Participatory Plan. These sessions will be very important moving forward. The final sessions in Round 3 will not be the opportunity to take further feedback regarding what kind of park improvements folks would like to see. Round 3 will work towards building our priorities, after assessing all of the previously-submitted ideas. Please let me know if you need me to clarify any of that information. So if there are any ideas that have yet to come forward, this is your chance!

The two sessions for Round 2 are:

This Thursday, Jan 26 from 6:30-9:00pm at the Churchill Senior’s Centre OR

This Saturday, Jan 28 from 1:00-3:30pm at Tom Brown Arena

To learn more about what will be happening during these sessions, check out this blog post:

http://kitchissippiward.ca/content/plan-your-parks-kitchissippi-parks-participatory-plan-round-2

As a reminder, both locations are fully accessible and child care is provided! Thank you Dovercourt. J

We hope to see you and the members of your associations there.

Thank you.

Kindly,

Fiona
