CPCA Submission to the Special Meeting of Ottawa’s PLC & ARAC

The attached letter is the Champlain Park Community Association’s submission to the Special Meeting of the Planning (PLC) and Agriculture and Rural Affairs (ARAC) committees, regarding expanding the urban boundary. The letter expresses Champlain Park’s support for two strong community values: the environment and quality of urban life.

Ottawa’s Community Associations have rallied to oppose the proposed urban boundary expansion. There are compelling reasons to “hold the line”. We do not, however, advocate a continuation of the same patterns in the future as we have seen in the past, with unplanned-for over-intensification inside the urban boundary, in particular in the inner urban Wards. We believe that intensification can be effected in an environmentally sustainable way that also respects the character of existing neighbourhoods.

Mosque Call to Prayer

From councillor Jeff Leiper’s newsletter #213 (May 1 2020):

Mosque noise exemption

As a sign of solidarity and unity, I was pleased yesterday to work with the Mayor’s office and By-law to provide a noise exemption to the Ottawa Mosque to be allowed to broadcast the evening call to prayer for up to five minutes during Ramadan (the last evening of which is May 23). I am assured that the noise level will be very reasonable and am confident this won’t be a disruption in the community. My thoughts are with those celebrating this month who can’t be with each other for iftar dinners and prayer. I’ll be stopping by the Mosque tomorrow to thank volunteers who continue to provide help to the Parkdale Food Centre.

Spring time trees

Are you one of the lucky ones with a front yard unimpeded by hydro wires? Do you have a backyard with space to breath? Want to start the next generation of the elder tree in your yard? There are still a few baby Bur Oaks (Heritage Champlain Oaks) and baby Sugar Maples available from my backyard nursery. They will become big trees, so not for tiny spaces. Curb side pick up available at Daniel Avenue, by sending an email to dbuckles@sas2.net.

Trees available for Planting

From: DANIEL BUCKLES <dbuckles@sas2.net>

Want to plant a tree, while practicing physical distancing in your yard? I have Champlain Oaks (Heritage Bur Oaks) and Sugar Maples in pots, available for you to pick up. These are very small saplings, but in 20 years will grow to be very large trees! They need room to grow, so may be best suited to backyards or frontyards with no obstructions.

Call Daniel at 613-807-8048 to arrange to pick up at the end of my driveway.
