Road Closures on Cowley, Sunnymede
Date: Mon, 16 Nov 2015 13:12:43 -0500
From: Christine Jackson
Subject: URGENT! – Immediate road closures – Cowley & Sunnymede, Nov 17-27
I live on Cowley Ave between Sunnymede & Clearview.
Today, Monday 16th Nov, I received a notice from the company Earthmovers, saying that Cowley, between Premier & Clearview, as well as Sunnymede, between Carleton & Keyworth, will be closed from 7am to 6pm, from Tuesday 17th November to Friday 27th November.
No info was provided regarding access to and from our homes during the daytime, or the reason for the work. (It was not that many years ago that the whole of Cowley was dug up & renewed for storm & sanitary sewers & water.)
I contacted 311 and the city agent had no record of the upcoming work. He put my request in the system for a traffic inspector to call me back with more info, as they are the people who have to issue permits for road closures. I also have a call in to the company Earth Movers regarding access during this period.
If anyone already has the answers to my questions, would you please post it here a.s.a.p.
Re my last message on this subject, I have heard back from Earth Movers. The work will be centred on the intersection of Sunnymede & Cowley & Sunnymede itself. It relates to the installation of a storm sewer along Sunnymede between Carleton & Keyworth.
It therefore seems that the most impact will be for those living on Sunnymede between Carleton & Keyworth. Cowley Ave between Premier & Clearview will not be dug up again (thank goodness!). It just means that Cowley residents will have to avoid the Sunnymede / Clearview intersection.
Apparently the work by Earth Movers will probably not start until Wednesday 18th.

Message from Ottawa Chief of Police Charles Bordeleau about Paris Events
From: PIA <PIA@ottawapolice.ca> Sent: Sat, Nov 14, 2015 8:48 pm
Subject: Message from Ottawa Chief of Police Charles Bordeleau
Community Leaders/Colleagues/Friends;
As the events unfolded yesterday in Paris, it is incumbent upon us as a police service to be aware of how this incident may have an impact on our local communities. We understand that these recent global events may be very challenging for members of our communities and that this incident may exacerbate these challenges and even be an opportunity for hatred to be misdirected. We continue to be in contact with our security partners at RCMP & OPP and information continues to indicate that there are no links domestically to Canada.
The Ottawa Police Service has a long standing collaboration with our various faith and community leaders that have allowed us to build strong and positive relationships. With this in mind, I want to take this opportunity to reiterate my commitment to ensure the safety of all of our communities. We also encourage all members of our communities to work together in continuing to ensure our city and country are safe.
It is with this relationship in mind that we encourage you to share this information as widely as possible with members of your respective communities.
If at any time, you or a member of your community feels that there is a life-threatening emergency or crime in progress, you are strongly encouraged to call 9-1-1. For all other non-emergency crimes, or for general inquiries, you are encouraged to call 613-230-6211. Visit our website at http://www.ottawapolice.ca/ for additional information about the services we offer.
The Ottawa Police Service is committed to professionally serving all residents of the City of Ottawa, and continues our work in partnership with all communities. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to working together.
Should you have any questions regarding this message, I would ask that you contact our Diversity and Race Relations Section at diversityandracerelations@ottawapolice.ca or 613-236-1222 ext. 5011.
Thank you for your continued support.

From READ – the Rosemount Expansion and Development group:
Do you care about Rosemount – YOUR COMMUNITY LIBRARY? Then please follow the activities of READ through our email list as well as facebook group, twitter and our website.
Rosemount Library is the second most used library per sq/ft of all 32 branches AND has been the #1 branch priority for the Ottawa Public Library for three years. Yet, other libraries lower on the list have had expansions and redevelopments. Now is a critical time for Rosemount, especially with all the surrounding development that is occurring.
READ (Rosemount Expansion and Development) is a group of local volunteers throughout Rosemount’s catchment area that want to help expand and redevelopment Rosemount Library. We are working closely with library staff and with politicians at various levels of government on this issue.
We would like YOU to follow our occasional email updates and our social media presence so that you know what’s going on. We may need, in rare instances, to engage library users in advocacy or planning and this is the way to find out.

Water Rates under Review
From Jeff Lieper’s newsletter. More at http://kitchissippiward.ca/content/water-and-wastewater-rate-review-new-lac-associates-research
As many know, the City is currently undertaking a review of how it charges for water and stormwater. I sit on the Environment Committee, and am looking forward to hearing how staff will or won’t recommend charging for water – which is currently billed strictly according to how much a household uses.
Reviewing how we charge for water and wastewater has become important since water usage is declining while expenditures are generally fixed and predictable.
To deal with this, the City is contemplating a new rate structure that could, for example, fix a fee that everyone pays for water, no matter how much they use, and then charge for any additional water on a consumption basis.
Invitation to Urban Forest Management Plan Workshop – November 24
Subject: Fwd: Invitation to Urban Forest Management Plan Workshop/ Invitation à l’atelier sur le Plan de gestion de la forêt urbaine
Date: Wed, 4 Nov 2015 12:55:32 -0500
From: Heather Pearl <hpearl2012@gmail.com>
Hello all. Please see the invitation from the City of Ottawa, below. The City is beginning to work on an Urban Forest Management Plan. Once it is completed, Ottawa will join the many cities in North America which already have developed and implemented these plans.
Thriving Urban Forests are vital to promoting human health. Trees clean our air and water, cool our neighbourhoods, support habitant and biodiversity and control storm water run-off. When mature trees are lost, communities suffer both immediate and long term costs. Yet, while, “The City of Ottawa has many policies, programs, initiatives, and regulations related to trees” it “is lacking a comprehensive, long-term vision and strategic direction for protecting and enhancing the urban forest.”
This is an important initiative. The first round of public consultations will be held on November 24. I hope that Champlain Park will be well-represented.

Please let me know if you are interested in participating in or receiving updates on this project.
Thank you,
Heather
