Water a Pontiac Planter!

Dog Walkers and River Riders

The community now has 7 planters to beautify the extension of Champlain Park at Pontiac Avenue, cared for by volunteer gardeners. To help them along, we invite dog walkers and any others that enjoy going down to the river at Carleton Avenue to take some water with them for the plants. Soak a plant in a planter, rather than sprinkling water around, so that roots go deeper. This will help ease the worry of the volunteer gardeners throughout the season.

We would like to also give a big shout out to Councillor Jeff Leiper, and assistant Fiona Mitchell, for their dedication and hard work to get the planters in place and set for planting this season. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

NeighbourWoods Tree Mapping Workshop – June 9, 10

Daniel Buckles points out that there’s another tree mapping workship this weekend, http://www.kanatabeaverbrook.ca/joomla16/index.php/8-news/167-tree-inventory-course-june-9-10 has the details of the two day workshop.

NeighbourWoods in Beaverbrook (Kanata) is running a tree mapping workshop with Dr. Andy Kenny Saturday June 9 and Sunday June 10. They have kindly offered a few spots to our neighbourhood, for those that would like to refresh or learn to use this protocol for tree mapping (tree identification and tree health assessment). Tree mapping in Champlain Park has raised awareness about the health of our urban forest and measured the many benefits in ways relevant to City policy. Its fun too!

If interested in attending, contact the organizer, Rob Mcaulay directly to register: info@kanatabeaverbrook.ca.

Adopt a Pontiac Street Planter

The Planters on Pontiac are almost ready for planting. The drainage issue has been resolved (holes drilled, gravel at bottom, lining for the planters) and we will soon have new soil (thanks to Fiona at Councillor Leipers’ office).

[Concrete Planters on Pontiac, with dirt installed]

There are a few Planters available for adoption. If you are willing, please contact Daniel Buckles (dbuckles@sas2.net), the Environment Committee Co-chair. The adoption protocol is:

  • The primary purpose of the planters is to beautify the street scape. Other goals (plant diversity, habitat) are secondary but encouraged.
  • The planters are loaned by the City to the community at large, so are not owned by individuals.
  • Volunteers adopt a planter for a year at a time, renewable as desired.
  • Volunteers make their own plant selections (no food plants allowed in 2018, but this may change in future. Perennials are fine, as are annuals and herbs)
  • Volunteers maintain the planter they adopt, including watering as needed. Contact planter neighbours if you need help.

Help to green our community!

Bonjour,

What tree should I plant in a small yard? – June 9

What tree should I plant in a small yard?

[Flowering Catalpa Tree in a Small Front Yard]

If you have thought about planting a tree in your yard but don’t know what options to consider, Saturday June 9 is your opportunity to pick the brain of Owen Clarkin, famed Ottawa tree specialist. Owen Clarkin and I are developing a decision-guide for site assessment and selecting the right tree for you. Make an appointment with us for Saturday June 9 between 1:30 and 5:00 pm (half hour intervals) and we will come by your house to walk you through the steps: What is the vision for your property, what are the notable attributes of candidate trees, what risks to consider, how to care for your tree as it grows?

We are particularly keen to talk with residents in new infill houses so we can see what is possible in very small yards.

Contact Daniel Buckles (Co-chair CPCA Environment Committee) for an appointment (dbuckles@sas2.net) or 613-722-8048.

Jane’s Walk about Local Oak Trees – May 6

Debra Huron writes:

Hug one of our community’s heritage bur oaks this weekend as part of the city’s annual Jane’s Walk. Here are details http://www.janeswalkottawa.ca/walks/19820

We will visit six majestic bur oak trees that will be coming into leaf. Learn how Champlain Park ‘hood has managed to get a provincial designation for these heritage trees—to date, the only such designations in Ottawa. Discuss and strategize on ways to ensure heritage trees and all our natural heritage are recognized by the City of Ottawa as it reviews its tree by-law in 2018.

Purple Martin Birdhouse Volunteers

Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2018 18:45:43 -0500
From: DANIEL BUCKLES <dbuckles@sas2.net>

Handy volunteer needed! Fun activity!

The Environment Committee of the CPCA has acquired the Purple Martin birdhouse from the former Trailhead site on Scott Street (almost the only thing actually salvaged). Thanks Adrian!

We have also received support from the NCC to install the birdhouse in the NCC woods between our community and the river.

Two volunteers are needed to make all of this happen.
