Ottawa Mosque – Champlain Park Neighbour

The Champlain Park Community Association (CPCA) was shocked and deeply concerned to learn of the vandalism and hate-filled messages that targeted the Ottawa Central Mosque in our small community last night.

We are deeply honoured that the Ottawa Muslim Association calls our neighbourhood home. And to our neighbours and friends we say: you are welcome here. We stand with you today, and we offer you our support, help, and vigilance to prevent future acts of hatred.

To our residents, please keep an eye out for any suspicious activity around the Mosque.

Suspects sought in recent swarmings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, October 25, 2016 9:10 am

(Ottawa)— The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit is investigating two weekend swarmings in the same area and is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects responsible.

On October 21, 2016, at approximately 9:00 pm, a lone male victim was walking through an alleyway that runs between Spadina Avenue and Bayswater Avenue when approached by three suspects. One male brandished a handgun which was pointed at the victim. The suspects took various items from the victim, including his wallet, phone, and some groceries which the victim had just purchased. The suspects then fled the scene.

The suspects were described as:

#1: black male, English speaking with a Jamaican accent, approximately 6’1″-6’2″ (185cm-188cm), approximately 20-25 years old, slender build, short black hair. The suspect was wearing a black bandana covering his nose, below his eyes and down the rest of his face. Subject was wearing a black or dark hooded jacket, black jeans or pants.

#2: black male, English speaking with a Jamaican Accent, approximately 5’10” (178cm), slender build, 20-25 years old, short black hair. The subject was wearing a dark hooded jacket and a bandana covering his nose, under his eyes and down the rest of his face.

#3: male approx. 5’10” (178cm), slender build, wearing a tight mask like neoprene covering his whole face. The mask may have had a white design on it. Ethnicity unknown.

On October 22, 2016, at approximately 11:00 pm, a lone female victim was walking in the area of Bayswater Avenue / Gladstone Avenue when she came upon 3-4 males. As the victim passed by, one of the males demanded whatever she had on her. They then surrounded her until she produced cash and her cellphone. One of the suspects was armed with a knife.

The suspects in this instance are described as:

#1: Caucasian male, approximately 5’8”-6’0” (174cm-183cm), slim build, wearing dark clothing. He had a balaclava concealing his face.

#2: Black male, approximately 5’6” (168cm), slim build, wearing a red hooded jacket and possibly red jogging pants. He was also wearing a balaclava.

#3 and #4 suspects have no description.

It is unclear at this time if the two investigations are definitively linked.

Extra vigilance is recommended as these investigations proceed, particularly for persons walking alone in this area during the evening hours. Attached are some safety tips related to swarmings and personal robberies: https://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/safety-and-crime-prevention/Personal-Robbery-and-Swarmings.asp

Local Vandalism

Hello Champlain Park community members:

We have had a couple of incidences of vandalism via the use of projectiles into people’s homes through their front windows.

The first incident was reported to me on August 27 2015. The first incident appears to have been caused by the use of an air gun or pellet gun. The second, most recent incident, occurred on or about June 21 or 22 2016 around late evening around 11:00 pm. Both incidences occurred on Clearview Avenue. I have no information on what may have cause the second incident. Both resulted in serious damage, which will cost the homeowners.

I would ask that Champlain Park community members be on the look-out for anyone in the neighbourhood – as I’m sure you already do – who appears to be loitering. These two incidences, which resulted in damage to property, could simply be a result of bored youth. But, they could be a precursor to other property damage.

Destruction of property is of course not acceptable. We would ask that anyone who see something “out of the ordinary”, please contact me. Please provide me with all the details you are able to gather. If, however, your property is damaged, please report it to the Ottawa Police Service and let me know as well. The Ottawa Police Service will be able to better track these types of incidences when they are reported.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,

Sarah Livermore

Subject: Break-ins – Champlain Park
Date: Tue, 26 Apr 2016 15:27:35 -0400
From: Sarah Livermore <sarah.livermore@hotmail.com>

Hello Champlain Park community members:

There have been break-ins in the Champlain Park area.

Constable Dawn Neilly-Sylvestre has done a check and there have been two reported break and enters from April 17th and 18th in our neigbourhood. One was on Clearview Avenue and the other was on Patricia Avenue. In both cases reported, the rear door was kicked in and the residents were away from the home.

Constable Neilly-Sylvestre would like residents to inform the police about any break and enters. Any information will assist the in linking the instances and in catching a suspect. As well, any video or image surveillance should be sent to either Constable Neilly-Sylvestre (neillyd@ottawapolice.ca) or Detective (Det) Angela Robinson (robinsona@ottawapolice.ca).

If you witness a suspicious person who is not normally seen in your area, please call the police and let them know. Be as specific as possible. State what you believed they were doing (i.e. checking out different houses or cars); what they look like; the last known direction of travel; and if they were on foot, bike or car.

The number to call if a break and enter is in progress is 911. If you are calling after-the-fact, call 613-230-6211 and Ottawa Police Service officers will be sent to you. Again, any video is to be sent to Det Angela Robinson (robinsona@ottawapolice.ca) or to Constable Dawn Neilly-Sylvestre (neillyd@ottawapolice.ca).

As an FYI, here are important phone numbers you should keep on your fridge (or on your phone):

  • life threatening emergency or crime in progress: 911
  • other emergencies: 613-230-6211
  • telephone report: 613-236-1222 ext. 7300

I would ask that anyone who has made a report to inform me, so I can assist Const. Neilly to track the incidences.

Thank you.

Sarah

Local Break-in

Subject: info for champlain park community members

From: Sarah Livermore <sarah.livermore@hotmail.com>

Hello Everyone:

A house on Patricia Avenue was broken into last night, April 17 2016.

The occupants had been out from 2:30 pm until around 9pm. As they turned off Island Park Drive, they noticed a bicycle resting on the cedar hedge on the north side of Sunnymede at Island Park Drive. They also noticed a young man walking towards the bicycle from Patricia Avenue.

The occupants noticed that their back door was wide open and three basement window screens had been cut. They also noticed bike tire tracks in their backyard. Nothing appears to have been stolen.

One of the occupants believes he saw that same young man with a bicycle a few nights earlier, at night, in front of their house. The occupant does not believe the young man was there very long.

If you have any information about this or anything similar, contact me, Sarah, at sarah.livermore@hotmail.com.

I will forward any information to Constable Dawn Neilly of the Ottawa Police Service (without your personal information, if you so wish).

Thank you.

Sarah

Door-to-door Salesman Warning

Subject: RE: Man soliciting at the door today

Hi Everyone,

I received this message about a door-to-door scam where the subject is wearing an id badge with “consumer information” as the company. They do have a web site but the subject’s story does not seem legitimate. Make your own calls, but beware of who you let into your homes and don’t feel pressured by persistence and assertiveness. I have added the OPS web page for door to door tips.

We may want to put out an alert about a man who came to my door this afternoon. He was wearing an id badge with ‘consumer information’ as the company. He started out saying he wanted to check the “filtration” in my water main. When I asked him what needed to be checked, he said that it had to do with Enbridge and they would have sent a memo with my last bill that he would be in the area. I stepped out on the porch to talk to him and he reeked of marijuana. I told him I had received nothing from Enbridge and I did not let unexpected people in my house. He left, heading toward Wellington.

White male in his 40’s, about 6’2 and heavy set. He was dressed in blue and white-pants, jacket and toque. His hair was covered, but it seemed to have a little strawberry blonde coming out from under the toque.

Not sure what he was after.

I called to report him to the police.

Hi Sarah,
This is just a note to let you know that my home has been the victim of malicious damage to our front bay-window.
Since we did not hear it happen – it may have happened when we were not at home – we do not know exactly when it happened. We think the damage was caused sometime in the early weeks of August this year. Our south facing window was attacked by some form of projectile that left a 1/2 inch hole in the outer pane of our thermopane bay-window. The window itself faces the street and measures 37″ wide by 49″ high. The hole is about 2 inches from the top and about 13 1/2 inches from the left (west) side.
Since the projectile did not penetrate the inner pane of glass, we surmise that it was not caused by a bullet. We think more likely that it was caused by the pellet from some form of air gun, though we cannot be sure. In either case, the damage will necessitate the complete replacement of the window which will amount to several hundred dollars.
The incident has been reported to Const. Dawn Neilly at the local Community Police Centre (Report number 15-208693). We are concerned that it may have been caused by one of the youth that live in Champlain Park. Hopefully, this kind of damage has not been perpetrated on any other home in our community.
We would be grateful if you would pass on this information to residents of our community through the Champlain Park website so that other residents can be informed of the incident. Someone, somewhere may have knowledge of who may have been responsible. If anyone has information that could help identify the perpetrator I would be grateful if they would contact us or the Community Police Centre at 613-236-1222, ext. 5871.

Door to Door Scam Warning

Subject: Scam alert
Date: Fri, 5 Jun 2015 18:57:54 -0400
From: Dawn Neilly <wellingtoncpc@gmail.com>

Cheryl Parrott is passing on the following information:

Another scam is operating in the Hintonburg neighbourhood, this time by Ontario Energy Group.

A rep shows up at your door (today it was a very pushy blond girl in her 20’s with a lot of makeup on) and asks questions about your home heating and air system. Then you are told by the rep that they need access to the inside of your house so that they can do a “visual”. At that point I said no, then was told that someone else would come by later and try again because a “visual” was mandatory, to which I again said no. The rep left, annoyed, but who knows, maybe later they’ll try again.

I did read up on the company and they exist as an HVAC sales company, but in no way are they “official” anythings. There have been complaints about them in the past and sometimes they operate under another name.
