Spring Cleanup Results

Andrea Murphy writes on Twitter:
Fruits of the @ChamplainPark spring cleanup today. Thanks to all who helped out. Strangest thing found in the woods was an old leather suitcase.

Actually, if you think about it, that’s likely a civil servant briefcase, possibly accidentally dropped by one of our neighbours from Tunney’s Pasture. It was “grossly mouldy” inside, so no worry about leaked documents.

Spring Cleanup 2019

LIFE’S MESSY.

April 27 28 WE CLEAN IT UP.

Champlain Park is looking for volunteers for our annual Spring Cleanup. The snow has gone and debris accumulated over a long winter has started to appear. Now’s the time to get it! Later, spring growth makes us pull out more grass than trash, and we wouldn’t want to do that.

The cleanup, part of the City’s Cleaning the Capital campaign, is a chance for neighbours of all ages – kids, teens, and adults – to get together, say hello, and help spruce up the neighbourhood.

Due to rain on Saturday and fieldhouse scheduling, we’ll meet at the fieldhouse on Sunday, April 28 at 12 noon. Juice, coffee, and cookies will be served. There is a map so that people can choose an area to work on. We’ll wrap up in a couple of hours.

The designated cleanup areas are the south side of Amanda above the transitway; the boulevard on Northwestern and the path at its north end; and along the fence on Patricia and Pontiac and in the Champlain Woods between the fence and the parkway. It also includes the beach area along the river at the foot of Carleton, and any other public spaces you think could use some help.

We recommend wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts, appropriate footwear and gloves. The City will provide garbage bags.

If you have any questions or suggestions, call Andrea Murphy or Ian Reid at 613-715-9504.

Community Bonfire Wrap-up

We had our second and well attended Community Bonfire this past Sunday. The weather was cold (not as much as last year) and sunny, with a slight breeze blowing clouds of smoke along whenever a Christmas tree was added to the fire.

First, thanks go to community event organizers Jim Cocks, Bill Baggs and Patrick Quinlan. They set it up and did most of the work.

Thanks to Bushtukah for their generous financial contribution, Bridgehead on McRae who provided coffee and supplies once again, and Councilor Jeff Leiper & Fiona for the smores, hot chocolate, permits and active participation!

Community Bonfire – February 10

Champlain Park Community Bonfire 2019

When: Sunday, February 10th, 3-5pm
Where: North End of Champlain Park

Last year, our first Community Bonfire in Champlain Park was a roaring success. Once again, community event organizers Jim Cocks and Bill Baggs, who initiated this hot idea, invite neighbours out of hibernation on Sunday afternoon (3-5 p.m.) February 10, to meet around a burning fire, skate on the outdoor rink, or ski on the SJAM groomed trail.

Bonfire Panorama.

The bonfire is located at the north end of our park near the link to NCC woods and the baseball diamond.

Our enthusiastic Councillor, Jeff Leiper, his assistant, Fiona Mitchell, and city workers sponsor the event by securing the open-air fire permit and the fire pit, contributing marshmallows, s’mores materials, hot chocolate and cups. Bushtukah and Bridgehead also lend support. It is a great opportunity to warm up with friends in the community after some winter outdoor fun!

Winter Carnival Thanks

Thank you to Volunteers at Winter Carnival 2019

Many thanks to a huge team of neighbours who volunteered to put on a very successful party at Champlain Park Saturday afternoon, January 26, 2019. To quote Pontiac resident, Dan Wilcock: “For those who were not able to make it this afternoon, I can assure you that it was an incredible event, extremely well attended, and really highlighted the joys of being part of this community.”

We welcomed visits from our elected representatives in all three levels of government: Mayor Jim Watson, City Councillor Jeff Leiper, MP Catherine McKenna, and MPP Joel Harden.

Congratulations and special thanks from the Champlain Park Community to the following enthusiastic volunteers who made it a memorable fun event:

  • Erin Topping and Kelly Archer were the awesome organizers of Winter Carnival 2019.
  • Jim Kot had the rink in great shape. Dave Bolger set up and supervised outdoor activity.
  • Jason Keats, creator of balloon animals, kept the children amused.
  • Linda Landreville and Katie Bolger served food and drinks.
  • Jennie Hornosty and Louise Atkins organized ticket sales.
  • Champlain Park Community Association sponsored the free sleigh ride.
  • West Wellington Business Improvement Area sponsored free entertainment and prizes.

Snow Shovelling Critical Time for the Rink!

Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2019 16:23:04 -0500 (EST)
From: kris.tom <kris.tom@sympatico.ca>

Hi Champlain Park

Urgent request to shovel the the snow that has fallen between 4:00 and 6:00 pm in preparation for the rain.

If shovellers could arrive at about 6:30 pm for about half an hour we should be in good shape to save the rink for the carnival.

Thank you.
