Hello,

Many community associations have learned the the Ottawa Neighbourhood Study (ONS) is an excellent source of information about neighbourhoods and the people who live in them. The information is readily available to the general public at the ONS web site (http://neighbourhoodstudy.ca/). Users can easily compare neighbourhoods using dynamic maps and charts. We are continually adding new information and functions.

If you are unfamiliar with the web site, we invite you to check it out. We have had some challenges lately – the web site was taken down for many weeks after the server was hacked by bitcoin miners of all things! – but we are pleased to tell you that we are now totally back in business.

We are always interested to hear what you think of the site and how you think it can be helpful to community associations and engaged citizens that want to make a difference to the neighbourhoods in which they live, work and raise their families. We will be sending you a survey later, to learn how ONS is being used and how we can be more useful. We hope that you’ll be OK about that!

If you have any questions about the Ottawa Neighbourhood Study or if you would like someone from our team to speak with your organization about ONS and what it tells us about your neighbourhoods, please contact me.

Churchill Ave south closure – March 3rd

Good afternoon,

Just a friendly reminder about the impending re-start of construction on Churchill Ave. on Monday, March 3^rd.

Churchill Ave southbound will be closed from Byron to Carling. OC Transpo buses #16 and #150 will be re-routed.

Note that the Princeton/Clare to Carling section will re-open in July to southbound traffic once the pole relocation and transfer of all utilities to the new poles is complete.

Review of Provincial Policy Statements by FCA

The Federation of Citizens Associations (FCA) has developed this table comparing the 2005 Provincial Policy Statement (PPS), the proposed revisions from 2012, and the final 2014 version which will replace the 2005 version on April 30, 2014.

The PPS is the statement of the government’s policies on land use planning. It applies province-wide and provides clear policy direction on land use planning to promote strong communities, a strong economy, and a clean and healthy environment.
Municipalities use the PPS to develop their official plans and to guide and inform decisions on other planning matters.
The PPS is issued under section 3 of the Planning Act and all decisions affecting land use planning matters “shall be consistent with” the Provincial Policy Statement.

I have updated my table which previously contained the 2005 and 2012 PPS versions by adding the 2014 version which was released this week. I have matched the text and identified where the changes were made to make it easier for anyone who wants to see the differences. There are a few spots where the matching was little difficult.

One disturbing thing that the Ministry did was to add the energy distribution and transmission systems in after the 2012 Draft was released. They have also removed institutions from the employment classification. They have changed “seniors” to “older persons” but have no definition for the latter. It is too bad it has been approved, as it could have done with another round of comments, particularly when they introduced new content.

Spotlight On… Katherine Hobbs! – February 22

On a lighter side, a local comedy group is “interviewing” our city councillor. I’ve seen them before, acting out responses to questions from the audience. For example one guest was asked by the audience “what was your worst night ever?”, she then told a story about having to stay at a really cheap hotel. The actors improvised, and somewhat exaggerated the scene, wandering through the hotel room and imaginarily picking up things, like blood soaked sheets and discovering some disgusting messes and a knife in the bathroom.

Could be an interesting night, funny and revealing if you can come up with the right questions.

Wildlife Speaker Series #1 – February 28

On Friday February 28^th, the City of Ottawa will be holding its first of four Wildlife Speaker Series sessions. Dr. Stan Gehrt, world renowned wildlife ecologist from Ohio State University, will provide insight on how people in urban and rural developments can coexist with coyotes. Dr. Gehrt will share his extensive knowledge and experience to provide a better understanding of coyotes, including how and why they live in settled areas. He will also show how residents can avoid problems with coyotes, such as taking preventative measures around their properties. In addition to the presentation at 7pm, information booths will also be on-hand for residents to acquire more information on Ottawa’s wildlife and natural environment. Great News: The first City of Ottawa Wildlife Speaker Series Session is just over a week away!

On Friday February 28^th, 2014 at Ben Franklin Place, the City of Ottawa will be holding its first of four Wildlife Speaker Series sessions. In addition to the presentation at 7pm, information booths will also be on-hand for residents to acquire more information on Ottawa’s wildlife and natural environment. These booths will be on display from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

The City will hold three more events in the Wildlife Speakers’ Series this year. The series is intended to increase residents’ knowledge and appreciation of wildlife and promote coexistence through understanding and respect.

Today marks the start of Kindness Week in our community and across Ontario.

Kindness Week is an initiative that started in Ottawa, and encourages community members to choose to be kind and recognizes those who engage in everyday acts of kindness. This event is made possible thanks to an organizing committee of volunteers from government, non-profit, corporate, education, and restaurant and hospitality sectors, and is facilitated by the Caring and Sharing Exchange. Building on successful Kindness Week in Ottawa, in 2009 I introduced a motion in the Ontario Legislature that unanimously passed and declared the third week of February as Kindness Week in Ontario.

Simple acts of kindness are the backbone of Kindness Week, and every year my office takes this opportunity to raise much-needed items for worthy organizations. This year we are partnering with the Snowsuit Fund in Ottawa, which helps to keep underprivileged kids warm during the cold season. This has been one of the coldest winters in recent memory, and the Snowsuit Fund has been of immense help to low-income kids and families across Ottawa. They bring dignity and hope to families who simply do not have the means to provide their children with the necessities for living.

Specifically requested are new, or gently used coats, snow pants, mittens, hats, scarfs and boots of all sizes. We will be collecting items at our Community Office (109 Catherine Street), until March 14, 2014.

I would also like to remind you about my annual Family Day Skate Party taking place this Monday, February 17. Please find the invitation attached. Everyone is welcome, whether you are new to skating, or already an expert. Join us at the Champlain Park Outdoor rink from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for some hot chocolate and fun!
