Christmas Tree Recycling

Recycle your Christmas Tree at the Champlain Park Baseball Diamond, anytime in January!!

It’s now time to collect trees in our neighbourhood at the park, as I am reminded by the appearance of the now traditional Kichi Sibi Winter Trail Facebook post:

Give your old Christmas tree a β€˜second life’ by donating it to the Kichi Sibi Winter Trail. Trees will be used to create wind breaks and safety barriers/cordons at various locations along the Winter Trail at Remic Rapids. Trees can be brought to the North East corner of the Champlain Park baseball diamond or to Remic Rapids anytime in January, 2025. The Winter Trail team will then make sure they get to where they are needed. Some may show up around the rink too!

Thank you from the Kichi Sibi Winter Trail Team, and happy skiing!

Yoga Class starting in January

I know you probably don’t want to think about exercising and stretching in the next few days but it’s time to sign up for the winter session of yoga at the field house. Good news we’ll have space heaters so the floor won’t feel like the North Pole.

Sandy will be offering two classes on Monday nights if there is enough interest. It will be YIN yoga. The 9-week session begins Monday January 6 and runs until March 10 (with no class on February 17 Family day). The classes are at 6 and 7:30pm. Price to be determined once registrants are confirmed.

Please DM on Facebook or e-mail me (lauriefagan59@gmail.com) if you want to register. If you took part in the last session and signed Sandy’s sheet there’s no need to get in touch.

Thanks
Laurie

Daybreak Gift Cards Wrapped

An update from Laurie Fagan, following up on the original post:

We have reached our goal of 67 gift cards for the residents of Daybreak Housing. We have five houses across the city (4 for men and one for women). Then this year we opened 2 new houses for refugee women (mostly from French Africa).

I huge thank you to all the residents who kindly donated gift cards – it will be most appreciated.

Happy holidays to all and this generosity reaffirms why I love living in Champlain Park.

See photo below (we still have 13 to wrap).

Gift Cards for Daybreak Housing Residents

An update from Laurie Fagan, following up on the original post:

Hello neighbours. I am back from my holiday and you can now contact me to donate a $25.00 gift card for residents at Daybreak Housing (I am on the board of directors).

One of the homes is 10 minutes from our neighbourhood. There are 48 residents in our 5 homes across the city. The men and women who live in the houses are homeless due to addictions, fleeing domestic violence or some have been in prison. Many have mental health issues.

This year we also opened 2 homes for female refugees (mostly from West Africa) so that brings the total number of cards were looking for to 68. I know that is a big number but I know Champlain Park residents are very generous.

If you can help you can send me a DM on Facebook or e-mail lauriefagan59@gmail.com to drop it off. The deadline is Wednesday December 18th. Thanks in advance for your generous donation and happy holiday.

Ideas for Improving Our Park – Reminder

We’re wrapping up the survey (https://champlainpark.org/2024/11/11/ideas-for-improving-our-park) at the end of Friday, so there’s one more day to get your ideas for park improvements to us. Hopefully we have time to do a short summary in the next issue of the Champlain Speaker, which should be out in a couple of weeks. For more on this, or if you want to help out more directly, please contact the Parks Committee.

Daybreak Housing Fundraiser

A message from Laurie Fagan:

I sit on the board of Daybreak Housing which provides homes to 48 people in 5 different houses across the city. One of the homes is just outside Champlain Park. Those who live in our houses have been homeless, fled domestic violence, may have recently been incarcerated. Many have addiction and mental health issues.

Two years ago Champlain Park residents kindly donated gift cards for each Daybreak resident for a Christmas/holiday present. I am asking if folks could do the same again this year. Next time you’re at Shoppers Drug Mart or Rexall you could pick one up, somewhere around $25 would be good. This gesture was so appreciated by Daybreak residents two years ago.

I will be away until December 9. PLEASE hold on to the cards until then and I will put up another notice about dropping them off. Thanks so much in advance.
