Gardening Initiatives Workshop – February 8

You are invited to a Community Gardening and Green Initiatives Workshop by the Peoples Official Plan Coalition

Saturday February 8
10:00am – 3:00pm
Trinity United Church
1099 Maitland Ave, Ottawa

This workshop will bring together organizations with experience in community gardening, green initiatives and stewardship of public land including: food gardens; pollinator gardens; etc.  We will discuss and share current challenges in order to prioritize action items prior to the March Ottawa City Council meetings regarding:

  1. The Community Garden Action Plan (discussed at the Community and Social Services Committee) 
  2. Use of and Planting within the Right of Way (Garden Boulevard) (discussed at the Transportation Committee

Topics will include, but not be restricted to:

  • Community food gardening
  • Pollinator/native plant gardening
  • Invasive plant control
  • Rewilding/Naturalization (including any policies that interfere with this)
  • Tree planting
  • Insurance
  • Community Engagement in setting policy and operational aspects related to planting on public lands.

New Field House Garden’s Plant Mystery

Hello fellow residents,

You may have noticed the new ornamental/pollinator garden in front of the field house. It has taken several years – yes I said years – to get approval from the city of Ottawa to build it.

Earlier this Spring someone dig up and helped themselves to a peony I planted there last fall. (It was dug up and the hole it left wasn’t even covered over)

Today I noticed an Asiatic Lilly has been snapped off at ground level and the phlox have been sheared off. I am an experienced gardener and I am fairly certain this latest damage isn’t from an animal.

If you live in Champlain Park could you take a minute to talk to your family members and tell them about the garden and all the hard work that went into creating this project. Many generous residents donated the perennials making it a truly community initiative. Let’s ensure it lasts.

The good news is the Champlain Rose has started blooming.

Greener Greenspace Award

Champlain Park has been recognized by The Society for Organic Urban Land Care (SOUL) as a 2021 Greener Greenspace award winner. The evaluation committee “particularly appreciated that your project makes the most out of the opportunity to turn a paved street into regenerative gardens and model forests that not only benefit local wildlife and the urban forest but provide opportunities to engage the public.”

Yahoo! And thanks to the volunteers that made it happen (Daniel Buckles, Kris Philipps, Catherine Shearer, John Arnason, Adrian Bradley, Joscelyn Coolihan), and to the Champlain Park Community Association for moral and financial support.

Pollinator Garden Update

[The new pollinator garden at Carleton Avenue and the people behind it]

Thanks! Many neighbours brought leaves to the new pollinator garden, which now has all we need there. The leaves will protect the soil from the coming rains, harbour diverse insects and perhaps some field mice over winter and enrich the soil when more flowering Native plants are added next spring (contact Catherine Shearer and John Arnason, our resident plant specialists, if you have native species to offer: metshag@gmail.com).

More Clean leaves are welcome at our other sites, the Pontiac entrance to the woods across from the school yard and the entrance to the woods on Patricia near Clearview. Leave bags there.

Thanks too to those that brought large stones to the site, which are used to shore up the earth mounds. Thanks to Kris Phillips especially for his initiative and hard work. More stones are still welcome.

The garden will be magnificent.

Need Leaves for the Pontiac Pollinator Garden

Have leaves, will help

You may have noticed the pollinator garden emerging at Pontiac and the entrance to the river. We want to keep the soil in place and continue to improve it with leaves. Lots of leaves. Please bring bags of “clean” leaves (no roots and bits of plants other than tree leaves) to the area (the Planters at Pontiac) over the next week. We also need them at two other entrances to the Champlain Woods, across from the school on Pontiac and the entrance on Patricia near Clearview, where tree planting this year has continued.

Want to help build up a stone boundary for the pollinator garden? When out in the woods consider bringing stones to the Pontiac location, and add them to the pile in front. They will be used to mark the mound edges and help keep the soil in place.

Community Garden for Kitchissippi – November 25

Large community garden likely for Kitchissippi – now looking for volunteers!

Are you a fan of community gardens? Do you have some time to spare and are interested in helping to launch a large allotment garden in Kitchissippi?

The Goldenrod Community Garden is a group of volunteers working to establish a large 60 plot garden on NCC land just north of Tunney’s Pasture. While we don’t yet have approval, we are encouraged by recent events as the NCC invited us to apply and we are currently going through their formal process. Our hope is to launch the garden in Spring 2020.
