Phone Scam on Police Association and Underprivileged Kids

The Ottawa Police Service is informing the public of an ongoing scam where a caller states that he/she is from the Police Association of Ontario and is looking for donations for “underprivileged kids.”

Ottawa Police can confirm that neither the Police Association of Ontario nor the Ottawa Police Association is conducting such a campaign.

The call comes from a 613-627-3200 number. When you call that number back, an automated message answers that you have reached the Police Association of Ontario—however, this number is not associated with the Police Association of Ontario or to the Ottawa Police Association.

This is a reminder for victims giving personal and financial information to such scams. Please be vigilant when asked to provide financial/banking information by phone. You can view tips.

The Ottawa Police Service Organized Fraud Unit is advising the public that are or have been victims of this scam to contact the Ottawa Police and make a report at 613-236-1222 ext 7300. The call centre is actively tracking all complaints and forwarding them to our Organized Fraud investigators.

Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by downloading the Ottawa Police iOS app.

Re: Say ‘No’ to Community Mailboxes Now

Dear Mayor Watson:

The members of the Federation have directed me to again write on their behalf. As you may recall, I wrote on January 20 requesting City Council ask Canada Post to:

halt the elimination of door-to-door delivery until concerns are addressed through meaningful consultations with municipalities and affected residents before implementation of the plan;
give assurance not to download the costs and maintenance of the community mailboxes onto municipalities without proper consultation and compensation.

Canada Post has not placed its plan on pause. The implementation of Community Mailboxes (CMBs) across Canada by Canada Post, without full and meaningful consultation, is a slap in the face to the citizens who live and/or pay taxes in the affected communities. All citizens – whether residing in Ottawa or in municipalities across the country – deserve to be treated with fairness and respect by the federal institutions that provide us with services. The actions being taken by Canada Post to implement CMBs are anything but fair, transparent or respectful. Consultation with neighbourhoods has been rare and hard to arrange.

Ottawa is a diverse city with many neighbourhoods being mature and urban, without the benefit of large, under-used spaces to accommodate CMBs. Accompanying traffic, litter, crime and noise will be a burden to adjacent property owner or nearby resident. CMB’s will lower property value and quality of life.

Reported experience of some of our members suggest any placement will be contentious and divisive. Worse though is that Canada Post proceeding with no consultation and minimal information for the affected neighbourhoods. We know that these CMBs will impose undue hardships on seniors or those with disabilities, especially in our harsh winters. There will also be additional municipal cost burdens to provide for lighting, litter and snow removal. Many questions remain unanswered regarding costs, security and accessibility.

Considering all of the negative impacts associated with this action by Canada Post, we call on you, our Mayor and Council to join close to 600 other Canadian municipalities and to officially oppose Canada Post’s plan for CMBs.

Should a motion come before Council, know that our residents we represent want to see leadership from the City of Ottawa, Canada’s capital in fighting plan for CMBs.

Another scam is operating in the Hintonburg neighbourhood, this time by Ontario Energy Group.

A rep shows up at your door (today it was a very pushy blond girl in her 20’s with a lot of makeup on) and asks questions about your home heating and air system. Then you are told by the rep that they need access to the inside of your house so that they can do a “visual”. At that point I said no, then was told that someone else would come by later and try again because a “visual” was mandatory, to which I again said no. The rep left, annoyed, but who knows, maybe later they’ll try again.

I did read up on the company and they exist as an HVAC sales company, but in no way are they “official” anythings. There have been complaints about them in the past and sometimes they operate under another name.

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service Sexual Assault and Child Abuse (SACA) Section has charged an Ottawa man following an investigation into an allegation of sexual assault.

In November 2014, an adult female reported to Ottawa Police that she was assaulted in her home by a male working as a door to door salesman. The incident occurred in October 2008, in an apartment located near Merivale Road and Kirkwood Avenue. There are no further details released in order to protect the identity of the victim.

Dodji Serge WILSON, 39 years old, of Ottawa is charged with Sexual Assault, Assault, Forcible Confinement, Criminal Harassment and Possession of a controlled substance. He is scheduled to appear in court today.

SACA investigators are concerned that there could be other victims.

(Ottawa)— The Ottawa Police Service Break and Enter Unit is seeking public assistance to identify a male suspect following a Break and Enter at a residence on Russell Avenue and releasing video footage.

After 2:00pm on May 7th 2015, the suspect male entered a residential unit and committed a Break and Enter.

The male is described as a black male in his early 20’s, medium build weighing 140-160lbs (64 – 73 kg). He was wearing a dark hat, camouflage tank top, blue jeans and Nike shoes.

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit is investigating a convenience store robbery and is seeking the public’s assistance to identify the suspect responsible.

On May 11, 2015, at approximately 2:35 pm, a lone male entered a convenience store situated along the 0-100 block of Jolliet Street. The male was brandishing a large kitchen knife as he entered. The suspect demanded money. The suspect fled the premise with an undisclosed quantity of cash. There were no injuries.

The suspect is described as being a Caucasian male, 20-25 years, stocky build, bald or hair is cut to the skin. He was wearing a Halloween style mask in the form of a white cat, and a black Nike winter coat.

Ottawa – The Gatineau Police Service and Ottawa Police Service’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) will focus on impaired driving and construction zones during the month of June.

Impaired Driving:

Between 2009 and 2013, there were 1703 collisions resulting in 726 injuries and 24 fatalities.

Construction Zones

In Ottawa, between 2007 and 2011, 981 collisions occurred in construction zones resulting in 212 injuries, nine of which were serious. Four construction workers were actually struck and injured on the job by a motorist.

The Safer Roads Ottawa Program is a leading community partnership between Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Police Service, Ottawa Public Health and the Public Works Department committed to preventing or eliminating road deaths and serious injuries for all people in the City of Ottawa, through culture change, community engagement, and development of a sustainable safe transportation environment.

Also participating in the Safer Roads Ottawa Program are the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Sureté du Québec, Department of National Defence’s Military Police and Gatineau Police Service to improve road safety for all residents of the national capital region.

Ottawa residents have identified traffic safety as a top priority. The Safer Roads Ottawa Program is committed to using available resources to make Ottawa roads safer for residents.

The space combines a sleek, modern design with an architectural theme mimicking the rooflines of the homes along Winston Avenue, joining the square to the community. In the spring, the living walls are now coming to life and, in the fall, the Virginia Creeper ivy will be ablaze in oranges and reds. The Facts

What: A new urban park in the heart of Westboro that will be programmed with music, crafts, and entertainment all summer long by the Westboro Village BIA. The park had its genesis in a request by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 480 to beautify the right-of-way space next to its building. Community consultations resulted in the beautiful oasis now being opened.

Project Shadow results in 52 people to be charged with Drug-Related Offences

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Street Crime Unit (SCU) identified a total of 52 people to be charged with drug trafficking and other related offences following a four month long undercover investigation focusing on both Rideau Street and the ByWard Market area in Ottawa.

“Project “Shadow” began with the goal to address public disorder issues along Rideau Street and the ByWard Market area in light of numerous public tips, complaints and police reports about drug activity,” said Staff Sergeant Sean Barrett Street Crime Unit/Break & Enter Team/Human Trafficking. “The Street Crime Unit targeted the illicit drug trafficking from February to May 2015. ”

As a result of this investigation – and with the assistance of Central Neighbourhood officers – 52 people (45 male – 7 females) have been identified and are to be charged with 188 offences related to the trafficking of crack cocaine, prescription pills and marijuana.

The total value of the drugs seized is estimated at $31,000. Of the 52 identified persons, 34 were arrested to date and the remaining 18 offenders are still being sought by Ottawa Police. Warrants for their arrests will be issued accordingly in the coming days.

“The Ottawa Police Service will continue to investigate drug-related offenses in the Downtown core and ByWard area as part of one of many enforcement initiatives this spring and summer, ensuring a safe community for all,” added Staff/Sgt. Barrett.

The Street Crime Unit was created within the Ottawa Police in 2007 to specifically target the street level trafficking, which was increasingly having negative effects in our community.
