Queen’s Jubilee Awards for Local Volunteers

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Awards presented to Ottawa Centre volunteers, residents of Champlain Park Community! Congratulations Christine, Heather, and Roland!

The Awards were presented to Christine Leadman, Heather Pearl, and Roland Dorsay by MP Yasir Naqvi at the Holiday Party he hosted on December 21, 2022 to celebrate community volunteers in Ottawa Centre. Yasir Naqvi announced “It is an honour to present the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee emblem to many volunteers and community members who are the pillars of our community and contribute to a more welcoming, supportive, and inclusive Ottawa. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II devoted her life to public service and had an admiration for volunteers such as you.”

To commemorate, the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth on the throne in 2022, Canada presented Platinum Jubilee Awards to residents of Federal ridings who have demonstrated a commitment to strengthening our community and improving the lives of their neighbours through voluntary service across a broad range of fields.

These Awards, in the form of a special commemorative pin and accompanying certificate, pay tribute to residents of all ages and backgrounds who performed unpaid work and showed selfless service to others to build a caring and supportive community.

Many thanks Christine, Heather, and Roland for your dedication to making Ottawa Centre a better place to live! The Award is well deserved.

Recycle your Christmas Tree at Champlain Park

Recycle your 🌲 Tree at the Champlain Park Baseball Diamond, anytime in January!!

Give your old Christmas tree a ‘second life’ by donating it to the Kichi Sibi Winter Trail. Trees will be used to create wind breaks and safety barriers/cordons at various locations along the Winter Trail at Remic Rapids. Trees can be brought to the North East corner of the Champlain Park baseball diamond anytime in January, 2023. The Winter Trail team will then make sure they get to where they are needed.

Tunney’s Pasture Redevelopment Input – Reminder

We’d like to take a moment to remind our neighbours that there is still time to apply to join the Tunney’s Pasture Communities Perspectives Group (CPG) to play a supporting role in the redevelopment of Tunney’s Pasture.  

Until August 26, any organization or individual that represents community interests can apply to take part in this small group hosted by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) and Canada Lands Company (CLC). Of course, Neighbours for Tunney’s shares the view that we’d like to ensure that a diverse variety of interests and perspectives are considered throughout the redevelopment of the non-federal development blocks at Tunney’s Pasture. 

Please consider the unique contributions that you could make and visit the CPG application form tab to learn more and complete the application.

We also encourage all local residents, community groups and stakeholders to explore these Engagement resources to follow the project and the consultation process.

Champlain Bridge Construction Work

Here’s the key part of a recent press release from the NCC, note that the bridge will be closed for a few days, then have reduced lanes available. The NCC rehabilitation info is at https://ncc-ccn.gc.ca/projects/champlain-bridge-rehabilitation

Champlain Bridge rehabilitation and bike lane improvements

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is planning some rehabilitation work on the Champlain Bridge starting in August 2022 and resuming in spring 2023.

The bridge, originally built between 1924 and 1928, has not undergone major reconstruction since it was widened to a three-lane crossing in 2002. Currently, various components of the bridge require rehabilitation as part of life cycle repair and maintenance to efficiently maintain the crossing. The planned work will include improvements to the cycling lanes to ensure continued safety and a better access for cyclists as well as major repairs and repaving of the bridge

What to expect:

  • The initial phase of work for this project will begin on  August 16 and should be completed by th end of November.
  • August 16-18: There will be a full closure of the bridge overnight on August 16, 17 and 18, from 10 pm to 5 am, for equipment installation. The sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians.
  • As of August 17: There will be one vehicular lane open in each direction between August and November 2022.
  • A dedicated multi-use path on the bridge will be in place for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the entire construction project.
  • Clear signage will be in place to help users get around the construction area.

Flag persons will be present at various locations to direct traffic. We ask that users exercise caution, respect working crews, and obey signage and flag personnel.

Transport Canada Public Notice

A public notice was submitted by the NCC to Transport Canada for information. The Champlain Bridge rehabilitation project will not have an impact on navigation on the Ottawa River. The public may view the posting by visiting the Transport Canada registry.

Tunney’s Pasture Redevelopment Q&A – June 20

Tunney’s Pasture Redevelopment Project: Invitation to Participate

Canada Lands Company (CLC) and Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) were very pleased to see the high degree of participation in our workshops of May 25 and 26, during which attendees provided input into the development of “community values” that will inform the redevelopment of Tunney’s Pasture.

And, we would also like to give members of the community another opportunity to have their questions answered during a virtual “Questions and Answers Coffee House” meeting that we will hold from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20. Following on from last year’s Tunney’s Pasture Redevelopment Survey…

In 2014, the National Capital Commission finalized and endorsed the Tunney’s Pasture Master Plan (TPMP). Registration open for workshops on the future of Tunney’s Pasture

Registration is now open for two virtual workshops to gather the public’s input on the transformation of Tunney’s Pasture from a single-use employment centre into a vibrant transit-oriented and sustainable mixed-use community that is integrated with surrounding neighbourhoods, while maintaining a strong federal presence.
