Repaired Park Benches!

I see that we have some repaired park benches, with new wood replacing the older splintered boards. There’s a bit of a story behind that…

Our community association co-chair had noticed that the benches were getting worn out, with splintered or rotting wood in several places. She took some photos last year in May 2017 to document it.

Worn out Bench (they all look like this). Though this one has one more recent beam in the back rest. Note the partial coverage of the back rest, which can be uncomfortable for some people. In May 2017.

City of Ottawa Older Adult Plan 2019-2022

The City of Ottawa is planning for its third Older Adult Plan 2019-2022. We want to hear from you!

Fill out this survey and tell us what you think is important for older adults living in Ottawa.

Like many other large cities in Canada and around the world, we are taking action to make Ottawa a more age-friendly city. The City of Ottawa Older Adult Plan supports a long-term vision for our community that values, empowers, and supports older persons and their quality of life.

The Older Adult Plan includes actions that are within the responsibility of municipal government. The City also works closely with the Council on Aging of Ottawa through Age Friendly Ottawa, who supports an Age Friendly Community Action Plan.

If you have questions about this survey or the Older Adult Plan, email olderadults@ottawa.ca

The survey will be open until Sunday May 20, 2018

O-Train Energized to Tunney’s Pasture

From: Berlin, Damon <Damon.Berlin@ottawa.ca>
Date: 10 April 2018 at 10:50
Subject: Overhead Catenary System – Electrification

[…]

Please be advised that OLRTC has begun with the electrification of segment 1 of the Confederation Line (Tunney’s to West Portal). This is exciting for the project and your ward but it is also important to remember that this is also a new danger that people need to be made aware of. To that end, I am attaching a bilingual education poster for you to share with your community association and neighbours. I will also be sharing this poster with the local schools.

Quarterly Ward Forum – April 30

From our city councillor Jeff Leiper’s newsletter #135:

April ward forum

Team Kitchissippi and I will be hosting our last ward forum of this term of Council on April 30. It’s scheduled for 6-8 at the field house at Van Lang (29 Van Lang Pvt.) We’ll have all the usual updates from community groups and BIAs. I’m thrilled that our guest speaker this time will be John Manconi, GM of Transportation at the city. It should be a good one.

Hazardous and Electronic Waste Depots

The dates for the Tunney’s Pasture hazardous waste depots are now known, Sunday, May 6 2018 and Sunday, September 16 2018. See the city web site https://ottawa.ca/en/residents/garbage-and-recycling/hazardous-waste-and-special-items for a list of the items that are considered too hazardous for regular garbage (things like mercury filled fluorescent light bulbs).

If you have electronic waste (old computers, TVs and other equipment) or fabrics you want to get rid of, Connaught Public School (Rosemount and Gladstone) http://connaughtschoolyardrenewal.ca/ (oddly not listing their own event for this year, though it is listed in http://www.recycleyourelectronics.ca/) is taking them to help raise funds for school yard improvements. Electronics and textile recycling on Friday April 20 from 7:45 to 8:30 am and Saturday, April 21 from 8 am to 1 pm.

The city also has a list of other e-waste events. I see there is one nearby at Dovercourt on Saturday, April 14 2018, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Smart City 2.0 Questionnaire – March 11

Our co-chair, Heather, is working on a SmartCity response for the CPCA. She would appreciate your input, but also encourages you to respond to the survey directly. Here is some background.

The Federal government’s Smart Cities Challenge invites cities to compete for a top prize of $50 million. The money will be used by the winning cities to respond to community challenges, by taking a “smart city” approach, using data and connected technology. The government is prioritizing applications that harness community input and feedback (that’s us!), to identify key challenges and potential solutions.
