Smart City 2.0 Questionnaire – March 11

Our co-chair, Heather, is working on a SmartCity response for the CPCA. She would appreciate your input, but also encourages you to respond to the survey directly. Here is some background.

The Federal government’s Smart Cities Challenge invites cities to compete for a top prize of $50 million. The money will be used by the winning cities to respond to community challenges, by taking a “smart city” approach, using data and connected technology. The government is prioritizing applications that harness community input and feedback (that’s us!), to identify key challenges and potential solutions.

FCA-FAC Planning Workshop – January 27

Just a note that the FCA is putting on a workshop titled “Ottawa – a City of Neighbourhoods” on the topic of:

It is intended to be a forum for discussion about planning among community associations, residents, city officials and the development industry. It is an opportunity to learn about planning issues, solutions and a long term vision for neighbourhoods in Ottawa.

Ashcroft Homes Convent Development Open House

Ashcroft Homes is proposing an adaptive re-use of Les Soeurs de la Visitation Convent at their 114 Richmond Rd site, which would see the building partially demolished and encapsulated in glass, combining heritage and modern elements. The refreshed convent would see office tenants and mixed commercial. We invite you to join us to learn more about this proposed development during a community open house:

Information on the proposed development will be available from Ashcroft Homes, and City of Ottawa staff in both Heritage and Planning will be on hand to field additional questions.

2018 Planning Primer Program Registration

The Planning and Growth Management Department offers the Planning Primer Program to help residents become more aware of, and more involved in, the land-use planning process. The program is a series of half-day courses. The content of these Primer courses is the same as those offered in previous years. The courses are offered in English only. Message from the Hampton Iona Community Group:

Think about the qualities that drew you to live in Hampton Iona. What made this part of Ottawa a place in which you wanted to live, raise a family and retire? How do you feel about the way your neighbourhood is developing now? What concerns you? What excites you? How do we retain the qualities that make this a special part of the city in which to live, while dealing with issues such as intensification and opportunities such as the LRT?

Come and join us on October 18th for a “big picture” conversation concerning the future of our corner of Kitchissippi Ward. With significant new development, infill and changing transportation systems, Hampton Iona and the rest of Kitchissippi Ward will look significantly different in 10 or 20 years. How can we have a voice in what our future will look like? What role can citizens play in designing our neighbourhoods and city; and coping with change? How can we make sure that our social and physical infrastructures keep pace with our population growth?

Book Club Inaugural Meeting – September 19

Amy Steele Kempster is setting up a book club. An inaugural meeting is set for Tuesday September 19th at 2pm, to decide on how to run the club and to find out how much interest there is.

They need to decide on things like:

  • When should the meetings be (likely on Tuesdays at 2pm since that’s available) and how often (monthly, weekly, bi-weekly)?
  • What sort of books should they read? Fiction, non-fiction, or specific genres. Or have the members choose books on a rotation basis.
  • Should they take turns reading and discussing a book, particularly if multiple copies aren’t available, or wait for everyone to have read it before discussing?
