Fisher-Park-Final-Concept1.pdf Thumbnail
Next week marks the end of summer for Kitchissippi kids, but the fun’s hardly over! I’d like to welcome you and your kids ‘Back to School’ with the, Grand Re-Opening of Fisher Park
Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013
3:30-5:00 PM
Remarks and official opening at 4:30
Fisher Park
250 Holland Avenue
Please join Mayor Jim Watson, my fellow Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee and me to celebrate the re-opening of Fisher Park with friends and neighbours and a few surprises too.

Since May, extensive renovations have been underway at Fisher Park to rejuvenate this well used community park.  Funding for the park from the City’s general spending was only $220,000 to replace the play structures and build a new splash pad. I invested $740,000 of Kitchissippi cash-in-lieu of parkland funds to ensure it received the upgrades our growing community needs, including:

  1. A larger splash pad area with expanded number of water features
  2. Two separate senior play structures, including a space net climbing component
  3. A realigned and separated pathway system for children’s safety and to accommodate flow through traffic
  4. Relocation of existing pre-school play equipment
  5. Significant number of new benches, picnic tables, trash receptacles & extension of the armour stone sitting wall around play areas
  6. Widened and landscaped pathway corridor leading to Holland Avenue park entrance, for visibility and public safety
  7. New fencing, pathway lighting, community bulletin board and 2 new park signs
  8. Grading, landscaping and extensive new tree planting to replace removals and to buffer adjacent residences
  9. Replacement of existing basketball court with 2 new full size courts and 2 practice keys
  10. Improvements to Elmdale Tennis Club site

I hope you and your family will be able to join us after the first day of school for this fun event.

Best wishes to your family for back to school,
Katherine Hobbs

Friendly reminder – No Messing around: Spring Cleanup 2013

Champlain Park goes green and clean on Saturday, April 27, 2013

The last weekend in April is Capital Cleanup Weekend, and Champlain Park needs volunteers.

This annual tradition is a chance for neighbours of all ages – kids, teens, and adults – to get together and help spruce up the neighbourhood.

This year we’ll meet at the fieldhouse Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m. Juice, coffee and cookies will be served. There is a map so that people can choose an area to work on. We’ll wrap up by noon. In case of rain, we’ll meet instead on Sunday, April 28.

The designated cleanup areas are the south side of Premier above the transitway; the boulevard on Northwestern and the path at its north end; and the areas along the fence on Patricia and Pontiac. It can also include the area along the river at the foot of Carleton, or any other public spaces you think could use some help.

We recommend wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts. Wear appropriate footwear and bring gloves. The City will provide garbage bags.

The Keyworth School Age Program has adopted Champlain Park and the students of St. George School are doing a great job cleaning it each spring and fall. Thanks go to them.

Now it’s time for the rest of us in the neighbourhood to do our part. Last year 42 people showed up – a wonderful turnout.

If you have any questions or suggestions, call Andrea Murphy or Ian Reid at 613-715-9504.
