I'm a game programmer, doing pretty much everything (from Wii, Kinect to iPad). On the side, just for fun, I write file systems (for the nifty BeOS/Haiku operating system) and experiment with metadata.

Good afternoon,
As part of its emerald ash borer management strategy, the National Capital Commission (NCC) wishes to inform you that a safety advisory was issued in order to advise the public that hundreds of dead or dying ash trees will be removed at a number of locations in Ottawaβs west side, including Fisher Avenue near Shillington Avenue, along the Ottawa River recreational pathway and along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway. Removal of these ash trees will start on Monday, December 8, and continuing through the month. Notwithstanding our efforts to save these trees, some are infected by the Emerald Ash Borer and need to be removed for public safety reasons.

Subj: Protection of Public Participation Act
Dear Neighbours,
I am pleased to inform you that our government is taking steps to protect the freedom of people who speak out on matters of public interest.
The Protection of Public Participation Act, re-introduced today, would enshrine the ability to freely participate in public discussion about matters of public interest, without fear of retribution, that is fundamental to a fair and democratic society.
In our community, I have heard about the need to preserve and protect public participation for many years and committed to bringing this issue forward, leading to the introduction of my Private Memberβs Bill, the Protection of Public Participation Act, in October 2012. I am very pleased that our government adopted my bill in 2013 and re-introduced it today.
If passed, it would allow courts to quickly identify and deal with strategic lawsuits and would also prevent the unwarranted silencing of critics, citizens and community groups advocating on matters of public interest.
Additionally, it would minimize the time and resources wasted by plaintiffs, defendants and the courts on meritless claims aimed to keep them quiet or deter others from speaking out.
It is imperative that we protect dialogue and debate, while also protecting individuals and citizen groups who are targeted by frivolous lawsuits simply for standing up for something important to their community.
For a prosperous community, it is important that we strike the necessary balance between protecting public debate and allowing legitimate claims to proceed in a timely manner.
I look forward to continuing to work with you on this important issue. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Subj: Leading Women/Leading Girls Building Communities Recognition Program
Dear Friends,
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Leading Women/Leading Girls Building Communities Recognition Program which celebrates the achievements of women and girls who demonstrate exceptional leadership in working to improve the lives of others in their communities.
Over the last several years, 110 women from our community of Ottawa Centre have received this award, more than anywhere else in the province! We all know women and girls in our community whose leadership helps improve the lives of others. I encourage you to take this opportunity to recognize their contributions and applaud their successes.
To nominate someone, simply fill out the attached form, answer three short questions about the nominee, and attach three letters of support. These letters must be unique to each nominee and should indicate how the nomineeβs work has improved the lives of others. Letters may be submitted by a community leader, mentor, employer, or another individual who has experience volunteering with the nominee.
Applications must be submitted to my office by January 14, 2015, so that I can submit them to the Ontario Womenβs Directorate in advance of the deadline. If you have any questions, or need any help completing your application, please do not hesitate to contact my Community Office.
