Safe Streets Working Group : Looking for Community Input

Our Ward Councillor, Jeff Leiper, has initiated a Safe Streets Working Group to document all of the dangerous spots and intersections along our streets. Jeff sees this Working Group as a way to create a complete inventory of places that can be tweaked through better street design and traffic calming measures to make our streets safer for all.

The Working Group consists of representatives from each of the Community Associations in the Ward and interested residents, as well as Anne Duggan, the Safe Streets Working Group co-ordinator. Roland Dorsay is our Champlain Park representative on the Working Group.

All residents are invited to send information about any traffic safety trouble spots in our area to Anne Duggan at safestreets@kitchissippiward.ca as well as Roland at dorsay@rogers.com by March 6.

What we are looking for is specific spots where it is difficult to cross the street, where accidents are more frequent than the norm, where speeding is a concern and/or safety is otherwise compromised. If you have concerns about any such locations, let us know where they are, with a brief description of the problem and a suggested solution if you have one. This is a great opportunity to have our traffic safety concerns given serious consideration.

Cowley Family History Presentation – February 27

I will be giving a presentation on the history of the Cowley family and their connection to Champlain Park to the Historical Society of Ottawa this coming 27 February.

As some residents might be interested in attending, and if you think it appropriate, would you please post the notice below on the CPCA website?

Historical Society of Ottawa Meeting, February 27, 2015
1:00 pm in the lounge of the Routhier Community Centre
172 Guigues Street at Cumberland.

Presentation: The Ottawa Valley’s Pioneering Cowley Family

Daniel Keyworth Cowley, a pioneering Ottawa Valley riverboat captain, was the patriarch of a family which produced significant contributors to the area’s history and economic development. These included an educator-cum-land developer who founded our Ottawa neighbourhood now known as Champlain Park, several medical doctors, another riverboat captainβ€”and an NHL Hall of Famer.

Champlain Park resident Christine Jackson will explain the Cowley family’s English origins, trace the 19th century Ottawa Valley history of β€˜Captain Dan’ and his connection with Champlain’s iconic lost astrolabe, and look at the family’s role in developing Ottawa, as well as their great contribution to Canada’s national winter gameβ€”and what, she wonders, would Captain Dan have made of that?!

Christine is a long-time family historian and active member of the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa (BIFHSGO). The 400th anniversary in 2013 of Samuel de Champlain’s voyage up the Ottawa River prompted her research into this pioneering Canadian family with deep roots in England, who gave their name to the Champlain Park area street on which she has lived for nearly 30 yearsβ€”Cowley Avenue.

Ottawa Police looking for wanted suspect Christian Tygesen for β€œQuick Change Scam”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, January 29, 2015 9:30pm

(Ottawa)β€”The Ottawa Police Service Fraud Section is looking for a wanted and charged man for a β€œQuick Change Scam” at 8 different grocery stores in Ottawa between January 6 and 15, 2015.

The man attended the stores and did the same style of Quick Change Scam. The man shows up at the cashier to purchase a small item. Once the transaction is completed, he requests change for big bills confusing and interrupting the cashier as he/she is calculating the amount.

He then takes the money out of the cashier’s hands and starts counting it himself, placing some of the bills in his pocket while the cashier is still removing bills from the register. He pursues this by placing numerous bills on the counter and tossing some into the open cash register, further distracting as he pockets more money. By the end of this β€œQuick Change Scam”, he has defrauded a significant amount from the unsuspecting cashier.

He attended grocery stores in the 600 block of Kirkwood Drive, 2500 block of Bank Street, 2200 block of Walkley Road, 1600 block of Heron Road, 1700 block of Merivale Road, 300 block of Carleton Avenue, 1400 block of Merivale Road and 1000 block of Cyrville Road.

The suspect has been identified by police as Christian TYGESEN, 47 years old of London (ON). He is facing a total 16 charges including Fraud under $5000.00 and Proceeds of crime not exceeding $5000.00 (see picture in link).

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Fraud Unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5492. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477 (TIPS), toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or downloading the Ottawa Police iOS app.
