Lower Speed Limits for Schools and Residential Streets

Subject: We did it! Ontario to lower speed limits in school zones and residential streets
Date: Tue, 8 Nov 2016 18:52:15 +0000
From: Yasir Naqvi, MPP (Constituency Office) <ynaqvi.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org>

Dear friends,

As you know, our community has been advocating for some time to lower speed limits on Ottawa’s residential streets and in our schools zones. As a parent myself, I know how important it is to have safe streets, which is why I made lowering speed limits part of my 2014 campaign https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udOCQhgE5Ng.

This morning, I was very excited to join Premier Kathleen Wynne at Elmdale Public School to announce new legislation that will make our communities and school zones safer. If passed, the legislation would give municipalities more tools to improve safety in community safety areas, school zones, and residential streets.

These measures would include:

  • Automated speed enforcement (ASE) technology on municipal roads, which takes pictures of speeders’ licence plates and is already used in many parts of North America and Europe, and for community safety zones and school zones;
  • The ability to create zones with reduced speed limits to decrease the severity of pedestrian-vehicle collisions in urban areas; and,
  • A streamlined process for municipalities to participate in Ontario’s Red Light Camera program without the need for lengthy regulatory approval.

For more information, please visit: https://news.ontario.ca/opo/en/2016/11/making-communities-and-school-zones-safer.html

I am very proud of our community for championing this important initiative to keep our streets and schools safe for children, pedestrians and cyclists all across the province. I would like to personally thank you for your hard work and determination.

What we have achieved today will help keep our kids safe and kids right across the province.

Yasir

Plan Your Parks Consultation

Councillor Jeff Leiper is consulting about what to do with Cash-in-lieu funds (rather than setting aside some land for a park, developers pay cash). What should we do to improve our park?

New Sidewalk on Clearview

Subject: New RMA advertisement; Clearview Avenue from Keyworth Avenue to Northwestern Avenue
Date: Thu, 10 Nov 2016 14:57:41 -0500
From: Heather Pearl <hpearl2012@gmail.com>

Hi all.

Please see the attached notice from the City. We are getting a sidewalk upgrade on the north side of Clearview between Northwestern and Keyworth. The existing too-narrow, ancient asphalt sidewalk will be replaced by a wider, people-friendly concrete sidewalk.

The new appropriate-width sidewalk will allow for much better separation of pedestrians from motor vehicles, including buses. This section of Clearview will become somewhat narrower and thus less friendly to speeders. The upgrade will make this part of Champlain Park safer for kids going to and from the park, pedestrians of all ages and people who use wheelchairs and other mobility aids.

Heather

Water Rangers Meeting – become a Citizen Scientist – November 29

Want to know more about the river that runs past our shore? Do you wish you could swim safely either at Westboro Beach or in the Carleton Avenue area?

Are you interested in fishing and wonder what kind of fish you might catch near our shores? You and your friends could become citizen scientists and build up a storage of knowledge about the river, its health, issues around it, and how we can improve it in our own neighbourhood and also in its entire length.

Come to a meeting on Nov. 29 at 7:15 p.m. at the Champlain Park Field House on Cowley Ave, in Champlain Park. Kat Kavanagh, the Designer and Executine Director of the Water Rangers Website will explain how the Water Rangers web site can be used to build up knowledge of local areas of the river over time by recording information on the web site on a regular basis. For example one of you could record such items as when ice has formed in the fall at a particular spot (say the bay at Carleton Ave), and when it has gone out of that bay in the spring. Where city information is available that could be used to add to the knowledge.
