Canadian Census – May

Following up on the previous census jobs post, here’s more info about the upcoming census in May. It looks like it will be mailed out in early May, and you can then fill it in on paper or do the census online.

Completion of Census forms ensures good data for many uses. For accuracy at neighbourhood levels it is extremely important as the smaller the area the greater need for all to participate. Census data can be shown at levels where the population is low only if the response rate is very high. Individual data is never available as confidentiality of individual or family data is protected by such means as rounding data, or suppressing in cases of very low numbers.

Further information re the Census can be obtained. It will take place in May . This material will allow you to encourage response. If you wish me to forward the census supporter toolkit toolkit I can do so.

I am contacting you today to inform you that the promotional products related specifically to promoting the completion of the Census questionnaire have been added to the Community Supporter Toolkit and are ready and available for use!

As part of the outreach strategy for the Census in 2016 we have developed this Community Supporter Toolkit (CST) in order to provide organizations, who wish to support the Census, with tools and materials necessary to do so. This tool kit contains a variety of electronic, social media and print media tools that you may use in order to help promote the benefits of completing the Census questionnaire within your community and networks. Your support and participation are both fundamental in helping to create awareness of the benefits of completing the questionnaire within your community.

At this point we are officially focusing our outreach efforts on Census questionnaire completion, with the questionnaire going out to households in May. However, you will not need to receive anything new, as the interactive PDF that you received previously has been updated to include new promotional materials. Please keep in mind that more materials will be added over the coming weeks, so be sure to check back periodically. Moreover, if you are having trouble finding your copy of the Community Supporter Toolkit, please let me know and I will send it to you again.

Notably, the Community Supporter Toolkit has been equipped with social media calendars. Essentially, these are calendars outlining the when and where for all our planned social media content for any given month. Currently, the calendar for April is available and the calendar for May will be added near the end of this month. I have attached the April calendar to this email. One of the simplest ways of helping to promote the Census within your community is through social media so feel free to follow, share, like and retweet content from Statistics Canada. Cycling in the City Newsletter

Locally, there’s a bit on “Byron Avenue Traffic Calming & Advisory Bicycle Lanes”.

The “New safe crossings of Carling Avenue and Bronson Avenue” mean you can now cycle along the parkway, get off at Bayview (Prince of Wales railway bridge) and cycle all the way to Dow’s Lake; the cycle path runs parallel to Preston Street and along-side the O-Train line. You can now easily cycle downtown along canal paths or to Carleton University.

Other topics worth mentioning are the Winter Biking Survey and Bike to Work Month in May.

Community Garage Sale – June 11

Yes, it’s that time of year again!

Time to buy back all that stuff you sold to your neighbour last year, but at twice the price.

We are planning to hold the community-wide garage sale again this year. As usual, it will be held on the first Saturday in June. Well, maybe not quite the first Saturday, but close to it!

Event date: Saturday June 11, 2016.
Rain date: Should it be pouring rain, the sale is moved to Sunday, June 12.

Residents on Island Park usually hold their garage sale at this time as part of this community-wide bargain hunters dream!

Think about donating a portion of your proceeds to the charity of your choice, or to help support Champlain Park Community Association.

Leftover treasures
If you have leftover treasures when the garage sale ends keep in mind that the Ottawa’s Spring Give Away Weekend will take place the same weekend as the garage sale (both days).

Message from Councillor Jan Harder, Chair of Planning Committee

It has been about seven months since Planning and Growth Management launched the Planning and Development e-newsletter. I am so pleased to see the number of subscribers increasing week over week. People are interested and engaged which I feel will lead to us, building Ottawa better, together!

Mark your calendars! Building Better Connections is May 4, 2016. This will be our first combination forum and webinar. Those interested are invited to attend Ottawa City Hall in person or participate online.

I am very excited about this event which will feature John Campbell – a visionary planner who redefined the Toronto Waterfront. Mr. Campbell was the President and CEO of Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation that undertook the largest urban revitalization project in North American history. The project was founded in the themes of deterring urban sprawl, promoting transit, enhancing design excellence, quality of life, and sustainability.

Following a question and answer with Mr. Campbell, our Planning staff will present a preview of two Planning Primer electives that are being created the Committee of Adjustment 101 and How to Present at a Standing Committee. The Stage 2 LRT Cleary Alternative Alignment Study has determined that it is feasible to adjust the alignment so that Cleary Station could be located on Richmond Road (at 747 Richmond). This session is an opportunity for the team working on this project to hear your thoughts and answer any questions or concerns.

This Information Session will:

Present recommendations for these changes at Cleary Station and the rationale for this improved alignment and station location, as well as measures to address environmental and community impacts and concerns
Provide background on initial alignment
Provide an opportunity for the community to engage with the team working on this project

Rosemount Library Update

Subject: Rosemount Library – update on consultation including online component

Dear community associations supportive of Rosemount Library,

A quick update on the Rosemount Library consultation process:
We had approximately 100 participants in the first consultation round. There was fantastic discussion at the round tables with many many ideas discussed — lots of room for all voices to be heard and recorded through the process. The facilitator focused conversation around Rosemount Library’s current strengths and assets, ideas on how Rosemount Library could be event better, and then there was some discussion on priorities.

Next steps:
We are getting close to the second round of consultation + we have an online option for library users to engage with the process. After those are complete, the consultant will be writing his report which will be presented to the OPL Board later this spring.

Your help within the next few weeks:
If you have the appropriate email/facebook/twitter/website/other channels, please consider promoting the information below. In particular, the online questionnaire is NEW information that your association members will have not seen before.
