Fieldhouse Oak and Historical Timeline Installation Follow-up

On December 21st 2013, we had the unveiling of two city of Ottawa sponsored monuments at the fieldhouse. The unveiling was attended by numerous residents, Cowley family members, councillor Katherine Hobbs and MPP Yasir Naqvi.

Just to follow up on the unveiling event (see previous post), we have a few photos, videos and articles to mention.

The Champlain Oaks web site has several articles on the production of the oak tree slice, and a little write-up about the event. They also point out a larger article that describes the event and background story by Steph Willems and published by Ottawa Community News.

A slice of an oak tree cut down for house development was preserved and the rings labelled with key dates. It’s now on display outside the fieldhouse in a custom case, with the addition of two new park benches you can sit on while admiring it.

Inside the fieldhouse, the timeline of neighbourhood history (enhanced with photos and museum grade professional text in both languages) was mounted on the wall.

Here are some of the people responsible for getting it done (see Katherine Hobb’s full speech for the full list), from left to right: Mark and Brian (builders), Katherine Hobbs (city councillor), Yasir Naqvi (MPP), Daniel Buckles and Debra Huron (community organizers).

Land Use Planning Workshop – November 21

From: ynaqvi.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org
Subject: Land Use Planning Workshop
Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2013 20:55:15 +0000

Dear Friends,

As you are aware, the Government of Ontario is currently reviewing the way cities and towns plan for development and how to help pay for it. We want to ensure that the land use plan and appeals systems, including the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), and the development charges system are predictable, transparent and cost-effective, and are consulting with the general public, municipalities and stakeholders on this topic through regional workshops, online, by email and in writing.

As you know, our community has a special interest in this matter. I, along with you, am committed to pursuing solutions which would help in creating a level playing field in planning and development matters, and towards building a sustainable community for us all.

In this regard, I am pleased to let you know that on Thursday November 21, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will be hosting a workshop in our community. This event will be taking place at Carleton University from 6:00pm to 9:30pm. This is an opportunity for residents, community associations, and businesses to get involved in this process.

Location: Residence Commons Conference Room, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa
Time: 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm

To view the agenda, and to RSVP please click here.

I hope you can participate in this session to ensure that our community’s experience and feedback is taken under consideration as part of this review.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Yasir

Leading Women/Leading Girls Building Communities Awards

Subject: Leading Women/Leading Girls Building Communities Awards

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to let you know that Ontario is kicking off its annual awards program that celebrates the contributions of women and girls in communities across the province.

Nominations are now open for Ontario’s Leading Women/Leading Girls Building Communities Awards. This has been an enormously successful program in our community. In Ottawa Centre, 92 women and girls have been recognized with this award since its launch in 2006, more than anywhere else in the province! Past winners include women who have made a positive difference in their communities by acting as a positive role model, encouraging girls to get involved in non-traditional careers, and championing issues such as financial security, diversity and healthy relationships.

There are so many women and girls whose leadership and actions are improving the lives of others and setting a good example. I encourage you to take this opportunity to recognize their efforts.

To nominate someone, simply fill out the attached form, answer three short questions about the nominee, and attach three letters of support. These letters must be unique to each nominee and should indicate how the nominee’s work has improved the lives of others. Letters may be submitted by a community leader, mentor, employer, or another individual who has experience volunteering with the nominee.

Applications must be submitted to my office by January 10, 2014, so that I can submit them to the Ontario Women’s Directorate in time. If you have any questions, or need any help completing your application, please do not hesitate to contact my Community Office.

Recognizing women and girls who are helping to build stronger communities is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to build a successful, compassionate and united province where everyone has the opportunity to connect, contribute and enjoy a high quality of life.

Sincerely,

Yasir

Ontario consulting on Planning Procedures, including OMB

Here is our MPP Yasir Naqvi’s announcement on upcoming consultation about the future of the planning process, OMB (Ontario Municipal Board) included.

From reading a related Toronto Star Article on OMB Consultation, the consultation is with municipalities, community groups (that’s us), and other stakeholders. Obviously the other stakeholders includes developers.

The news came out at the AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) annual conference in Ottawa.  In the daily events listing I see lots of interesting topics discussed there, from Beer Stores vs Convenience Stores to water infrastructure.  They even had a closing keynote speech from Terry O’Reilly, host of one of my favourite radio shows, The Age of Persuasion, talking about “The Power of Emotion Marketing”. However, Ontario premiere Kathleen Wynne didn’t say anything specifically about the OMB in her opening speech. Nice to see that the opposition leaders also got a chance to speak.

OMB Consultations Announced

Ontario to consult on our land use planning system, the role of the OMB and municipal development charges.

I am very excited to announce that today at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference, the Government of Ontario outlined our plans to engage Ontarians on matters related to land use planning in our province.

Our government believes in the importance of a strong land-use planning system that empowers Ontario municipalities to make sustainable planning decisions, protect the environment while creating jobs, attracting new investment and strengthening local economies.

After listening to the concerns of our partner municipalities and key stakeholders and are pleased to announce that this fall, the government will launch two important consultations designed to improve land use planning in Ontario. These consultations will address land-use planning appeals at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), and the Development Charges Act and other municipal development-related fees and charges.

We are always interested in constructive ideas to make our land-use planning system more effective, and these consultations will build on the progress we have made to date, including creating the Greenbelt, introducing the Growth Plan and making important reforms to the OMB. Further details on the consultation dates, and how to participate will be made available this fall. As soon as this information is available, I will let you know.

I am very pleased by this announcement. As you know, our community has a special interest in this matter. I, along with you, am committed to pursuing solutions which would help in creating a level playing field in planning and development matters, and towards building a sustainable community for us all.

Please do not hesitate to contact my Community Office if you have any questions about this exciting initiative.
