Re: Say ‘No’ to Community Mailboxes Now

Dear Mayor Watson:

The members of the Federation have directed me to again write on their behalf. As you may recall, I wrote on January 20 requesting City Council ask Canada Post to:

  • halt the elimination of door-to-door delivery until concerns are addressed through meaningful consultations with municipalities and affected residents before implementation of the plan;
  • give assurance not to download the costs and maintenance of the community mailboxes onto municipalities without proper consultation and compensation.

Canada Post has not placed its plan on pause. The implementation of Community Mailboxes (CMBs) across Canada by Canada Post, without full and meaningful consultation, is a slap in the face to the citizens who live and/or pay taxes in the affected communities. All citizens – whether residing in Ottawa or in municipalities across the country – deserve to be treated with fairness and respect by the federal institutions that provide us with services. The actions being taken by Canada Post to implement CMBs are anything but fair, transparent or respectful. Consultation with neighbourhoods has been rare and hard to arrange.

Ottawa is a diverse city with many neighbourhoods being mature and urban, without the benefit of large, under-used spaces to accommodate CMBs. Accompanying traffic, litter, crime and noise will be a burden to adjacent property owner or nearby resident. CMB’s will lower property value and quality of life.

Reported experience of some of our members suggest any placement will be contentious and divisive. Worse though is that Canada Post proceeding with no consultation and minimal information for the affected neighbourhoods. We know that these CMBs will impose undue hardships on seniors or those with disabilities, especially in our harsh winters. There will also be additional municipal cost burdens to provide for lighting, litter and snow removal. Many questions remain unanswered regarding costs, security and accessibility.

Considering all of the negative impacts associated with this action by Canada Post, we call on you, our Mayor and Council to join close to 600 other Canadian municipalities and to officially oppose Canada Post’s plan for CMBs.

Should a motion come before Council, know that our residents we represent want to see leadership from the City of Ottawa, Canada’s capital in fighting plan for CMBs.

Yours truly,
Graeme Roderick, President

Hello,

As part of its emerald ash borer management activities, the National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to inform you that approximately 200 trees will be planted in Hampton Park in the coming weeks. This planting program is a follow-up to the tree cutting that took place in January as a result of emerald ash borer infestation.

Work will begin today and will take place from Monday to Friday between 7 am and 5 pm. The replanting is being performed by Gemma Property Services, and should be completed by mid-June, depending on equipment availability and weather conditions.

Prolonged street and trail closures will not be required for this work. However, it may require the temporary closure of trails and streets to allow access for the vehicles required to perform the work. We ask you to exercise caution, and to follow instructions provided by on-site workers.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact NCC Client Services at 613-239-5000 or info@ncc-ccn.ca.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Bonjour,

Good afternoon,

As part of its emerald ash borer management strategy, the National Capital Commission (NCC) wishes to inform you that a safety advisory was issued in order to advise the public that hundreds of dead or dying ash trees will be removed at a number of locations in Ottawa’s west side, including Fisher Avenue near Shillington Avenue, along the Ottawa River recreational pathway and along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway. Removal of these ash trees will start on Monday, December 8, and continuing through the month. Notwithstanding our efforts to save these trees, some are infected by the Emerald Ash Borer and need to be removed for public safety reasons.

For more information, please refer to the safety advisory.

Bonjour,

A group of nine students in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Queen’s University are completing a project course that focuses on re-imagining the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway (SJAM) as a linear park along the Ottawa River from LeBreton Flats to Mud Lake.

They would like to ask some questions about the SJAM Parkway, as well as to receive input on things you enjoy or value about the park, any challenges it currently presents, and any changes you’d like to see occur. Attached are:

You can send your answers (the PDF has fillable fields) and the consent form to Alia Tulloch <alia.tulloch@queensu.ca> (copied). Or you can fax the signed consent form to the School of Urban and Regional Planning (attn. Parkway Project Group) at 1-613-533-6905.

The supervisor of this project, by the way, is David Gordon. Some of you may remember him as one of the speakers at the NCC’s Greenbelt Visioning Workshop in November 2009, where he reportedly said that “some” development could be ok, while also advocating extending the GB to areas further out. (Neither of these ideas went anywhere as the Greenbelt Master Plan review proceeded: a very “green” vision of the Greenbelt was maintained but, except for reincorporating Leitrim Wetland, no major extensions were adopted.)

Hope some of you will wish to participate. I can find no deadline but imagine they want your answers pronto.

Erwin

Planning Workshop for a Linear Park Along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway – May 27

In case anyone has some good ideas for improving the river park…

Planning Workshop for a Linear Park Along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway

Hello,

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is exploring the possibility of creating a linear shoreline park on lands between Preston Street and Carling Avenue to enhance the green space along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway. We would like to invite a representative from your organization to participate in a planning workshop to explore this idea. The workshop will be held on May 27.

The purpose of the workshop is to consider various ways to transform sections of the Ottawa River shoreline corridor into a park. The aim is to make this corridor a space that people visit more often and that is more accessible to the public for a variety of uses, while also ensuring unimpeded access to the river for the neighbouring communities.

This workshop is part of the development of the Capital Urban Lands Master Plan and Parkways Policy, and follows on public consultations that were held in March. Participants will have an opportunity to contribute toward the development of this idea by helping the NCC to define a vision and principles that will guide further consideration of the park, as well as the activities and uses that would be suitable for the space, considering its importance to the Capital.

The workshop will take place as follows.

Date: Tuesday, May 27, 2014, 7 pm to 9:30 pm
Location: NCC Headquarters, 40 Elgin Street, 5th Floor, Capital Urbanism Lab/Studio

Agenda
Introduction 7 pm to 7:15 pm
Workshop 7:15 pm to 8:30 pm
Plenary 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm

Please confirm your attendance before May 23. Contact Jocelyne Moncion, Public and Community Relations Officer, at 613‑239‑5678, ext. 5106, or jocelyne.moncion@ncc-ccn.ca.
