Tree discussions and other related material. There are lots of trees in the neighbourhood, and a fair amount of tree related conflict with development, which means quite a few posts are tree related. Not everything is Champlain Oaks Project, thus this more general tree category.

Spring time trees

Are you one of the lucky ones with a front yard unimpeded by hydro wires? Do you have a backyard with space to breath? Want to start the next generation of the elder tree in your yard? There are still a few baby Bur Oaks (Heritage Champlain Oaks) and baby Sugar Maples available from my backyard nursery. They will become big trees, so not for tiny spaces. Curb side pick up available at Daniel Avenue, by sending an email to dbuckles@sas2.net.

Want to plant a tree, while practicing physical distancing in your yard? I have Champlain Oaks (Heritage Bur Oaks) and Sugar Maples in pots, available for you to pick up. These are very small saplings, but in 20 years will grow to be very large trees! They need room to grow, so may be best suited to backyards or frontyards with no obstructions.

Call Daniel at 613-807-8048 to arrange to pick up at the end of my driveway.

1451 Wellington Condo Construction Starts

The condominium at the corner of Island Park Drive and Wellington/Richmond Road will finally be starting construction, after many months of full page advertisements in the Ottawa Citizen. Hello everyone!

I know it’s been a while since we lasted checked in with you about this, but Mizrahi is now in a position to move ahead with the construction of their approved project, and work will be beginning immediately.

We are still in the process of organizing a pre-construction meeting with the wider community, which will give residents a head’s up about the work and what to expect moving forward. I am waiting for Mizrahi to provide me with date options that work for them.

While the pre-construction meeting is still be organized, work will begin on the site (this is not my preferred option but unfortunately this is what has occurred due to scheduling issues). Please review below the first schedule:

Tree Planting Help Needed – September 28

Join the enviro committee of the community association on Saturday September 28 at 10 am (till noon) on Pontiac Avenue between Patricia and Keyworth Avenues (across from the north end of St. George school) as we plant Tamarack, Elderberry, Paper Birch, and other trees that will bring more ecological diversity into the Champlain Woods.

Bring your own gloves. If you have shovels and wheel barrows, those are welcome, too! We will go ahead rain or shine.

National Tree Day – September 25

Grade 2 and 3 children at St. George Catholic School in our neighbourhood will celebrate National Tree Day at 1:15 pm this Wednesday by planting a tree on the Pontiac side of the main school yard. Join us that same day from 4:30 to 6:30 pm to plant a tree (or two) in “the Little Woods” at Patricia and Clearview. Weather permitting, tree planting will continue in the NCC forest near the school on Saturday, from 10 till noon. Bring your shovel and/or a pick!

For those interested in the bigger picture, attend a Tree Canada event at the Museum of Nature, where the NCC, the City of Ottawa and the Ville de Gatineau will present the results of a tree canopy assessment. This report on the extent of the current tree canopy is meant to support planning for the future of urban forestry in the region.

Woodlands Restoration

Woodlands Restoration (and garlic mustard harvest)

Please join us at The Little Woods (Clearview and Patricia) every Monday and Thursday evening in June from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, to help with the woodlands restoration. We are removing garlic mustard (a edible but invasive plant) and planting native ground cover and shrubs suitable for a woodland garden. The corner lot is a City property. Restoration will extend to several prominent locations in the NCC woods (Champlain Woods).

Bring gloves, shearers and small shovels if you have them. Contribute as much or as little as you can.

Planting Trees in Small Places: Options to consider when selecting the right tree for you.

Do you have a plantable space in your front or back yard? Do you have a mature tree in your yard that needs a new generation growing up beside it? This pamphlet offers some tips and points you to suitable native tree species. Native species are key because they also support the native insects and birds adapted to them. Some examples are provided here, with a link to 79 native species suitable for Champlain Park. Let’s all do our part to sustain the trees that make this a special neighbourhood.

Our tree giveaways are starting back up!

The largest outreach effort in the history of our organization is about to begin!

For the past two years, we have been giving local native tree saplings to Ottawa-area residents. 2019 will be the largest giveaway yet. Ecology Ottawa has 12,000 trees that need to find their forever homes. This year, in addition to nine different kinds of coniferous and deciduous trees, we will be giving away a variety of fruit- and nut-bearing trees and shrubs.

Environmental Initiatives Meeting – February 21

Interested in learning about and contributing to environmental initiatives in Champlain Park? Meet with the Environment Committee on Thursday, February 21 from 7:30 – 9:00 PM at the Field House. We will discuss the steps we can take together to foster sustainable living in a healthy urban environment, including:

  1. Planting ground cover and shrubs in conjunction with the removal of invasive species in selected spaces in the Champlain Woods
