And finally one minor item that didn’t fit anywhere else:

http://onwec.com/2015/05/28/project-shadow-results-in-52-people-to-be-charged-with-drug-related-offences/

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, May 28, 2015 9:21am
Ottawa Police Service

Project Shadow results in 52 people to be charged with Drug-Related Offences

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Street Crime Unit (SCU) identified a total of 52 people to be charged with drug trafficking and other related offences following a four month long undercover investigation focusing on both Rideau Street and the ByWard Market area in Ottawa.

β€œProject β€œShadow” began with the goal to address public disorder issues along Rideau Street and the ByWard Market area in light of numerous public tips, complaints and police reports about drug activity,” said Staff Sergeant Sean Barrett Street Crime Unit/Break & Enter Team/Human Trafficking. β€œThe Street Crime Unit targeted the illicit drug trafficking from February to May 2015. ”

As a result of this investigation – and with the assistance of Central Neighbourhood officers – 52 people (45 male – 7 females) have been identified and are to be charged with 188 offences related to the trafficking of crack cocaine, prescription pills and marijuana.

The total value of the drugs seized is estimated at $31,000. Of the 52 identified persons, 34 were arrested to date and the remaining 18 offenders are still being sought by Ottawa Police. Warrants for their arrests will be issued accordingly in the coming days.

β€œThe Ottawa Police Service will continue to investigate drug-related offenses in the Downtown core and ByWard area as part of one of many enforcement initiatives this spring and summer, ensuring a safe community for all,” added Staff/Sgt. Barrett.

The Street Crime Unit was created within the Ottawa Police in 2007 to specifically target the street level trafficking, which was increasingly having negative effects in our community.

Walkability Audit for Albert and Scott Streets – May 25

Last fall’s audit was discussed in a previous post.

From: Cheryl Parrott <cheryl.vance@sympatico.ca>

Subject: Last Pedestrian Safety Walkability Audit

Last Pedestrian Safety Walkability Audit, Albert and Scott Streets

Anyone available to help either at 2 pm or 4:30pm on Monday, May 25 – we only have 1 person confirmed. Please let me know if you can help.
RSVP: cheryl.vance@sympatico.ca

Monday May 25 – 2 pm for Albert St and at 4:30pm for Scott St.

We partnered with the Council on Aging and Good Companions Senior Centre to pilot an all season Pedestrian Safety Walkability Audit of Albert and Scott. The last audit is scheduled for Monday May 25. As in the past there will be 2 parts – Albert Street and Scott Street.

We plan to meet at The Good Companions for a 2 p.m. start along Albert Street, and at the Tom Brown Arena for a later start at 4:30 p.m. along the Scott Street route – on Monday, May 25th. If you can join us for either or both of these audits please let us know.

On the Scott St side a number of sidewalk hazards were identified and sent to the City in the first audit. Those sidewalk/trip hazards have just recently been marked in orange paint for repair.

The widening of Scott St. is expected to start soon – perhaps in May. The contract for the work should awarded soon.

The collected data from three Ottawa neighbourhood walkability audits will be part of an All-Seasons Pedestrian Safety Report developed in partnership with Ecology Ottawa.

Hope to see you there. Please RSVP so we know how many people we will have.

Cheryl
