Feedback on Police Street Checks – August 21-26

From: PIA@ottawapolice.ca
Sent: 05/08/2015 8:49:32 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time

Dear community partners
On Behalf of the project lead A/Insp. Mark Patterson, for the Ottawa Police Service’s Street Check Project, I would like to invite you to participate in a feedback session about street checks.

In order to ensure maximum participation, we have the following options to choose from :

  • Friday, August 21 4:00pm- 5:30pm City Hall Festival Control Boardroom, 110 Laurier Ave.
  • Tuesday, August 25 10:00am-11:30am City Hall Festival Control Boardroom, 110 Laurier Ave.
  • Tuesday August 25 3:00pm-4:30pm Ottawa Police Station, Pat Hayes Boardroom, 474 Elgin St.
  • Wednesday, August 26 4:00pm-5:30pm City Hall Festival Control Boardroom, 110 Laurier Ave.

Please register here today to save your spot at one of the listed sessions. Your registration will ensure sufficient preparations for food and beverages.

The Ottawa Police Service welcomes the Ontario Government’s decision to carry out consultations this summer in order to create guidelines to standardize street checks across the province. The aim is to establish provincial rules for street checks to ensure these encounters are consistent, without bias, and carried out in a manner that promotes public confidence in order to maintain the use of a valuable tool for police. See announcement
An update on the Ottawa Police Service’s Street Check Project was provided to the Ottawa Police Services Board on Monday, July 27, 2015. The update report includes:

  • Street Check Public Education: Key information about our street checks including when they are warranted, the type intelligence collected and their role in preventing and solving crime;
  • Street Check Data 2011-2014: A summary of street check data including information on age, gender and race/ethnicity breakdown. The police service is releasing this information now without further analysis for context and trends because there have been requests from stakeholders, the media and through the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Engagement Plans: Plans for consultation that will allow us to contribute to the provincial guidelines development this summer and set the direction for another phase of community-police engagement once the provincial guidelines are released to us later this year.

Street checks are one of the intelligence tools that police use to help prevent and solve crime in the community. The development of provincial guidelines and an Ottawa Police policy will not only lead to improvements but will enhance public confidence and trust building.

Ongoing community and police feedback and dialogue is critical to next steps.

I would much appreciate your participation,

Bayview Yards Innovation Centre Construction Starts

From: ian.fraser@thebayviewyards.com
Sent: 29/07/2015 6:10:11 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time
Subj: Construction on the Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards Kicks Off in August!

Good afternoon,

I hope all is well with you, and that you are enjoying the summer! As you may know, I have the pleasure of serving as a Director of the Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards currently under development in our neighborhood at 7 Bayview Road. It will be the first entrepreneurship hub of its kind in Ottawa – and it will be located right in our backyard!

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am excited to announce that construction of this novel facility is just around the corner! On August 5th, our design/build team led by Morley Hoppner will initiate the renovation of this building and transform it into the future Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards. As this unique heritage building will be located in the heart of our community, we wanted to share important information on the construction process over the next few months and what this will mean to you – our neighbors, fellow residents and future stakeholders of the Innovation Centre!

Please find attached a construction notice and backgrounder that can be shared with members of your community. This information is also posted on the Innovation Centre website: http://www.thebayviewyards.com/, and we will be tweeting it shortly. You can follow us at:@IC_BayviewYards!

Lastly, we will be hosting a community information session this fall and look forward to sharing details about this special event in the weeks ahead. Should you have any questions about construction or the Innovation Centre more broadly, please do not hesitate to contact myself, or Sonya Shorey, our Communications Strategist at 613.851.9416 or sonyashorey@rogers.com

Many thanks, and have a great holiday weekend!

Best regards,

Ian

Hello Community Associations and BIAs,

As mentioned in a previous e-mail, Jeff is holding another Ward Forum on August 22, from 10am-1pm at the Orpheus Musical Theatre. We invite all of you, your members and neighbours to attend and join Jeff in conversation about our lovely ward. We will circulate a poster closer to the event, once we have finalized our community partners.

As in previous forums, we are inviting each association to have 5 minutes to present any updates or announcements to our community. Please start thinking about what you would like to say, and who will represent your organization by speaking to the group. Once you have finalized your announcements, we are asking if each association could provide us with a typed, brief copy of the speaking notes for our records. This can be provided closer to the forum. The order of speakers will be randomly selected during the event.

Please respond to this e-mail letting our office know if your association will be represented at the event, who will be giving your announcements, and if they have a title (President, Treasurer, etc).

Thank you, and we look forward to engaging with your associations at the forum!

Kindly,

Fiona
