SJAM Winter Trail Improvements

Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2019 12:28:40 -0500 (EST)
From: CoChair1

The SJAM Winter Trail now comes directly into Champlain Park!  My husband and I cross country ski regularly on the trail.  What a wonderful amenity to have so close to home, no driving required.  Dave and his volunteers are doing a great job of maintaining the trail, even without fresh snow, so I recommend getting out there; walking, skiing, snow shoeing or cycling with a fat tire bike are all possible.  There is a fire pit near Remic Rapids, with ski rentals by Fresh Air Experience, and an outhouse there too.  Thanks goes to Adrian Bradley (CPCA Environment Committee) for working with Dave Adams, Dovercourt and the NCC.

This is not yet fully publicly funded, so donations are still required to keep this initiative going.  You can donate at the following link:

Environmental Initiatives Meeting – January 17

Interested in learning about and contributing to environmental initiatives in Champlain Park? Meet with us on Thursday, January 17 from 7-9 PM at the Field House. We will discuss the steps we can take together to foster sustainable living in a healthy urban environment, including:

  • Rehabilitation of the “Little Woods” (Patricia and Clearview northeast corner lot)
  • Discuss extension and widening of the existing trail between Carleton, Northwestern and the Remic Rapids Woods
  • Rehabilitation of selected sections of the Champlain Woods (invasive species, tree planting)
  • City’s plan for the Northwestern median
  • Options for planting street trees
  • Update on the Pontiac Street closure
  • The Planters and potential for community garden.

Convened by Daniel Buckles and Adrian Bradley, Co-Chairs, Environment Committee of the Champlain Park Community Association.

Rink Operational and Christmas Tree Reuse

Just two small items…

Skaters have been seen on the Champlain Park Outdoor Rink, which implies it is useable now! More details about the rink hours, facilities and the need for volunteers at https://champlainpark.org/park/the-rink/

The SJAM Winter Trail is collecting cleaned up Christmas Trees for use as a windbreak. Leave them at the Remic Rapids outhouse.

Christmas Sleigh Ride – Thanks

Many Thanks to Volunteer Neighbours for Community Sleigh Ride 2018!

What a wonderful way to start the Holidays with Carol Singing and Jingling of Bells through Champlain Park!

A special thank you to Jim Cocks who was the energetic organizer of the event. Dennis Van Staalduinen, West Wellington Business Improvement Association, led the singing of Christmas Carols with enthusiasm! The Sauve family, with Tom Sauve playing a lead role, once again prepared the special visit to Santa and distribution of candy canes to children by Santa’s helpers. The Champlain Park Community Association funded the event. Thank you to volunteers who made hot chocolate and donated baked goods that were enjoyed by everyone at the field house. Families came out of hibernation to an evening with mild weather and a great opportunity to connect with neighbours! See the attached photos contributed by John Arnason.
