Consultation on Future deployment of Conducted Energy Weapons (CEWs)

Hello,

My name is Uday Jaswal and I am the Superintendent of the Patrol Directorate at the Ottawa Police Service (OPS).

I am assisting with a review being conducted by the OPS with respect to the current deployment of Conducted Energy Weapons (CEWs), commonly referred to as ‘tasers’.

As part of the review, the OPS is consulting the public and community groups to gain a better understanding of community questions and comments related to CEWs.

We would appreciate your valuable input as it will form part of our review and will help contribute to a report to the Ottawa Police Services Board in the spring of 2014 outlining recommendations for future deployment.

There are several ways by which you can provide your feedback:

For more information, please visit ottawapolice.ca/cew or read our media release.

Regards,
Superintendent Uday S. Jaswal

Cordialement,
Le surintendant Uday S. Jaswal

Fieldhouse Oak and Historical Timeline Installation Follow-up

On December 21st 2013, we had the unveiling of two city of Ottawa sponsored monuments at the fieldhouse. The unveiling was attended by numerous residents, Cowley family members, councillor Katherine Hobbs and MPP Yasir Naqvi.

Just to follow up on the unveiling event (see previous post), we have a few photos, videos and articles to mention.

The Champlain Oaks web site has several articles on the production of the oak tree slice, and a little write-up about the event. They also point out a larger article that describes the event and background story by Steph Willems and published by Ottawa Community News.

A slice of an oak tree cut down for house development was preserved and the rings labelled with key dates. It’s now on display outside the fieldhouse in a custom case, with the addition of two new park benches you can sit on while admiring it.
Tree Slice Installation

Inside the fieldhouse, the timeline of neighbourhood history (enhanced with photos and museum grade professional text in both languages) was mounted on the wall.

Here are some of the people responsible for getting it done (see Katherine Hobb’s full speech for the full list), from left to right: Mark and Brian (builders), Katherine Hobbs (city councillor), Yasir Naqvi (MPP), Daniel Buckles and Debra Huron (community organizers).

We also have videos of the unveiling:

You can also view the whole ceremony and speeches in 20131221-tree-whole.mp4 and 20131221-timeline-whole.mp4 Sorry about the clattering noise, due to a camera microphone malfunction. A high definition 720p version exists, but was too big to post here.

Info Meeting on Hydro Ottawa Island Park Drive Work – January 30

Subj: Island Park Drive System Expansion Project and Community Meeting

Dear Kitchissippi Community Association,

You are invited to attend an upcoming community information meeting regarding Hydro Ottawa’s plans for a system expansion project that will begin along Island Park Drive in the spring of 2014. This work is being undertaken to ensure reliability of the electricity supply in the growing Westboro area.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 30th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Churchill Seniors Centre located at 345 Richmond Road. Residents of Island Park Drive and Kitchissippi ward Councillor Katherine Hobbs, have already been notified about this information session by direct mail. Hydro Ottawa will also be placing an advertisement in the January 23rd issue of the local EMC newspaper (attached). We would also invite you to post information about this meeting on your website to help us inform residents.

While the commencement of this project is months away we wanted to provide your association with as much advance notice as possible as there will be increased construction presence while the project is ongoing, including excavation activities and construction vehicles. Traffic control will also be implemented to ensure Island Park Drive remains accessible and safe for residents. Design drawings showing the construction zones and equipment storage areas, the planned locations of underground cables and chambers as well as details on how we will protect area trees and manage traffic flow, will be available at the information session.

Please contact Brian Thompson, Distribution Design, if you have any questions about this project. He can be reached at brianthompson@hydroottawa.com or 613-738-5499 x7264.

Sincerely,

Morgan Barnes
