City Forestry is seeking your answer to a one-question survey on a proposal to amend the Tree Protection Bylaw. A resounding “Yes” will help them extend the bylaw’s coverage to the same sized trees in the suburbs, as are already covered in our neighbourhoods. Suburban trees currently have no protection until they are 50 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH), whereas urban trees are covered at 30 cm DBH.
Ottawa’s tree canopy is in serious decline. In 2017, the NCC did a tree canopy study (Lidar) for the National Capital Region. Ottawa’s tree canopy was at 31%, most of which was in lands reserved for recreation or conservation – not in neighbourhoods.
By 2021, we were down to 25% (per City Forestry):

Research shows that a 40% neighbourhood tree canopy cover is necessary to help mitigate the impacts of climate change, including the Heat Island effect. Heat, and the polluted air that it cooks up, affect our physical and mental health. We need to protect our mature urban trees.
Request for Input! A Proposed Amendment to streamline the City of Ottawa’s Tree Protection By-law
In June 2022, Council directed staff to consult with the public on amending the Tree Protection By-law to reduce the size of Distinctive Trees in the suburban area of Ottawa from 50 to 30 cm in diameter measured at breast height. This change would bring the tree by-law permitting rules for the suburbs in line with those for the inner urban area of Ottawa.
We are requesting your input through a survey available on Engage Ottawa, which will be available until October 10, 2023.

Works from a desktop browser for me. Though it has a strange start with something that seems like a drop-down box where you actually type in your postal code and the drop down part shows you possible postal codes that match what you typed. So type in enough to get your actual postal code showing in the drop-down part and then click on it. Weird, eh? Could have just typed in your postal code.
