Tree Seedlings – October 15

via Heather…

FYI.  Hi.  In case you are interested, there are free trees on offer.  As for the other three docs: the CAFES Tree Manual is pretty darn good; Ecology Ottawa’s “How to Plant” is a simple guide for people who don’t already know how to plant trees; and, the Just Food Community Farm map is neat for those interested in taking a look at what’s being done on NCC lands by some Ottawa groups vis a vis sustainable agriculture.  It could be an interesting half-day trip for families.

Hi CAFES friends and tree lovers:

This Saturday Oct 15, we have an opportunity to team up with friends from Foret Capitale Forest and Ecology Ottawa to rescue about 1,200 seedlings that are left over from the 2022 Ecology Ottawa seedling-give-away project.

You can help in three ways:

  1. Come and Adopt one or more tree seedling(s) for planting in your space

(a) Check out the list of tree species available here. For a good fit, consider what kind of planting space you have available including factors like soil, light conditions, space, need for salt tolerance (proximity to road). Use the CAFES Residential Tree Guide or the Rockcliffe Park Ottawa Area Native Trees, Shrubs and Vines Database.

(b) Sign up for a tree pick up on Saturday October 15 between 10am to noon

(c) Come and pick up your seedling(s) on Saturday morning 10-noon at Just Food Farm (detailed directions below).

(d) Planting instructions are here. Note that the seedlings are little – planting is very easy.

  1. Come Volunteer and help plant

On Saturday, October 15th, we intend to plant around 1,200 seedlings of various species.  To make short work of this large task, we will choreograph the work during the day.  Shovels and other equipment will be supplied, however, we ask that you bring your own gloves and water bottles. We will split the day into two shifts. The first is from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, the second is from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. You are also welcome to sign up for both shifts. The event will run rain or shine so please dress accordingly (warm layers, closed toed shoes).

Sign up to volunteer here. We are looking for 15-20 volunteers per shift.

There will be some light refreshments and the event is family friendly. You are also welcome to combine this with a family excursion and walk about on the trails at the Just Food Farm which is part of the greenbelt and NCC (see map below).

Date: Oct 15, 2022
Location: Forêt Capitale Forest Base of Operations (2391 Pépin Ct)
Parking: On Site
Meeting Point: Next to the seedling structure, between numbers 21 and 22 on the farm map.

  1. Donate for material costs

If you cannot join us on Saturday but think this is a great community initiative, you can make a small donation to FCF to help pay for the 16 square yards of mulch that Shelley ordered to amend the soil to welcome the seedlings to their temporary overwinter home.

You can do so here.

We are expecting a survival rate of about 80% and FCF is expecting to be transplanting the seedlings in spring and fall of 2023, including onto NCC land at Mer Bleue.

Hope to see you out on Saturday at the Just Food Farm!
